Chubushnik is fluffy. Chubushnik: the best types and varieties, care and cultivation

Chubushnik ( Philadelphus) often called garden jasmine, although it has nothing to do with true tropical jasmine. This is a shrub reaching a height of more than 4 m. The garden mock orange blooms in the first half of summer with white flowers, many species and varieties have fragrant flowers. Due to the exceptionally rich flowering of the shrub, mock orange attracts the attention of breeders. Currently, many varieties and hybrid garden forms have been bred. They differ in aroma, and in terms of flowering, and in the shape of the bush.

Many of them belong to the hybrid species Lemoine mock orange (Ph. x lemoinei).

There are small-leaved (‘Avalanche’, ‘Manteau d’Hermine’)

Large-leaved varieties (‘Alebastre’, ‘Glacier’). In small-leaved varieties of mock orange, the flowers are relatively small, in large-leaved varieties, on the contrary, they are large, often terry.

The mock orange (Ph. coronarius) has the form ‘Aureus’ with golden yellow leaves and the variegated ‘Variegatus’.

Miniature, up to 0.6 m in height, form ‘Nana’, like other dwarf forms and varieties of mock orange, does not bloom, but forms a dense cushion bush.
When describing the mock orange, it is worth noting that it prefers fertile, moist soils. During a drought, it needs watering. It can grow both in the light and in partial shade.
It tolerates pruning, which consists in removing old stems for better development of young shoots. The stems are either sawn out near the ground, or shortened to a strong branching. Mock oranges are rejuvenated by pruning "on the stump". The shrub is easy to propagate by green cuttings. If you see a plant on the lawn of a friend that reminds you of a jasmine flower, do not jump to conclusions: most likely, you have a real mock orange in front of you - garden jasmine. By the way, gardeners appreciate this plant because it is able to please the human eye for most of the summer. And the shrub belongs to the proud Hortensia family.

Its outlandish name - Philadelphus - the bush received thanks to the ancient Egyptian king Ptolemy Philadelphus. But the second part of the name was fixed because a plant with such a plastic structure was previously used to produce very important elements for pipes popular in “troubled times”, for example, mouthpieces. Modern chemists have managed to bring out a huge variety of different types and varieties of mock orange. However, it should be noted that the homeland of the shrub is still North America, most of the European continent and the territory of East Asia. Look at the photo of the mock orange bush: we have a plant in front of us, which is characterized by thin stems covered with brown or gray bark, and small leaves.

This variety is considered photophilous, but can also be grown in dark places.

Planting and caring for mock orange in the open field

Experts note that planting mock orange in places of concentration and stagnation of moisture can cause the death of the plant. Therefore, it is still worth choosing a moderately moist soil. A very important feature of the shrub is that it is very resistant to changes in temperature regimes - for example, temporary drought - and reacts normally to air polluted with exhaust gases. When the bush bears fruit, you can see tiny boxes on its branches, in which there are seeds necessary for the reproduction of mock orange. Simple, double or semi-double fragrant flowers, forming lush brushes, are formed on young shoots. This description of the mock orange in the photo can be considered in more detail in order to independently verify the extraordinary beauty of the plant:

Undoubtedly, the most important feature of the shrub is that it is very frost-resistant: however, much also depends on the type and variety of mock orange, which was chosen for planting. But one thing should be remembered: even if the plant is very badly affected by the influence of low temperatures, only the ground part of the bush will die, which can be easily cut in the spring. Garden jasmine is characterized by rapid regeneration, so you should not worry about its possible appearance. Caring for a mock orange is elementary: the shrub itself tells a person when, for example, it needs to be watered urgently. This becomes clear if you carefully observe the leaves of garden jasmine. They will certainly hang in the hot summer season if they do not have enough moisture.

In almost any description of mock orange varieties, you will read that they need weekly watering in the amount of two or three buckets of water. This is especially true of the period when the shrub pleases your eye with its flowering: during this period of time, you should even repeat the watering procedure almost every day.

The land in the watered area should be thoroughly loosened and all weeds should be removed from it. True, if you were prudent and carried out mulching in the spring, then you will have to weed the ground much less often.
To make the best varieties of mock orange feel most comfortable in your garden, feed them with slurry every year in the spring. It would also be reasonable to fertilize the soil under garden jasmine after it blooms: you should use ordinary wood ash and simply scatter it under the plant before watering.

How to plant a mock orange in spring

It is best to plant and care for the mock orange if it is in a well-lit area, because then you will have a guarantee that the bush will definitely give a lush color and fill the entire garden with a delicious aroma.
When thinking about the question of how to plant a mock orange in the shade, remember that you are consciously subscribing to the fact that your plant will have very elongated shoots and small flowers.
Before planting, be sure to prepare the soil for the bush, which would combine earth, sand and a sufficient amount of humus (ratio 3:2:1). Do not miss the point that in the absence of good soil permeability, it would be wise to fill the hole for garden jasmine with a drainage layer. Experienced gardeners recommend planting plants in the autumn, starting in September and throughout the first half of October. But if you are thinking about how to plant a mock orange in the spring, keep in mind that the procedure should be carried out as soon as possible - before the buds swell. It is imperative to think about how to properly plant a mock orange so that its root system does not suffer. For example, if you need to plant several plants, experts advise digging holes at a distance of at least 50 cm. To create a hedge, you need to place seedlings at a distance of about 70 cm.
The next stage involves filling the dug hole with the already mentioned drainage layer with a mixture of soil. This is done in advance - at least a couple of weeks before planting garden jasmine.
Be careful that planting and caring for a mock orange in the open field implies careful immersion of the root: the neck must necessarily show a little above the ground. The maximum immersion depth should not exceed 3 cm so that the plant does not begin to rot. After all this, you should carefully moisten the ground under the seedling by pouring a couple of buckets of clean water. Next, you need to add dry soil to the pits. Do not forget, after 3 days from the moment of disembarkation, to carry out mulching - to fill up the area under the bush, for example, with sawdust. Be sure to take a look at and care for the mock orange: these steps involve abundant watering of the young plant:

If you need to transplant garden jasmine, do not be afraid: the bush will easily endure this procedure, but it will have to sacrifice its beautiful lush crown. But you can see the mock orange in the photo after planting, which was done twice: the plant feels great and pleases the owners with a new abundant flowering:

How to achieve such a result after transplantation? You just need to prepare a hole for the plant in two weeks so that the soil settles. Next, you should water the mock orange well, which will need to be transplanted, remove half of the shoots of previous years, and prune the rest. Only then can the bush be dug up and moved to another place. We recommend that you transplant in the first half of September or March.

How to prune a mock orange bush in spring

Pruning mock orange is a guarantee that your landscape design will be full of magnificent fragrant garden jasmine flowers year after year. Moreover, you see in the photo a mock orange bush, in the description of which the moment is important that such large buds open only on the strongest last year's branches:

Therefore, all unnecessary - weak shoots - can be safely removed! How to cut a mock orange so that in a year it will delight you with new flowers? To do this, it is necessary to remove branches that have faded to young strong shoots located below. By the way, this procedure is carried out in the fall and also involves sanitary clearing, which helps to get rid of the branches that thicken the crown, and diseased or broken parts. And every three years, there is also a stripping of branches that have reached twelve years. The renewing pruning of the mock orange in spring suggests that several shrub trunks must be cut to about 30 cm, while others are mercilessly cut to ground level. To know how to cut a mock orange in the spring, novice gardeners ask for advice from experts who certainly recommend using a var to process plant sections and mulch the soil with peat. If you listen to the advice, in the fall you will see how healthy shoots appear.

Propagation of mock orange in spring by cuttings

You could already see that this plant is not very demanding. Therefore, a similar situation develops with the procedure for breeding shrubs. We mentioned that garden jasmine can be propagated using seeds - that is, generatively - and now we will also talk about the vegetative method - propagation of mock orange by cuttings, dividing the bush and layering.
If you nevertheless chose the first option - generative - then you should remember that before planting the seeds, you must definitely keep them for two months in a place where the temperature will not be higher than 2-3 ºC. This procedure is called stratification.
In order for everything to go well, at the beginning of the year, skilled gardeners add the same seeds to peat, immerse the mixture in various containers, and leave it in this state in the refrigerator until spring. When the time comes, the seeds are sown in boxes, which are pre-filled with a mixture of humus, leafy soil and, of course, peat (1: 1: 2 ratio), and sprinkled with a layer of sand on top, then covered with glass. It must be remembered that the soil must remain moist, so crops should be sprayed with a sprayer 2-3 times a day.
After a week and a half, you will see the result of your efforts: shoots will begin, and when the first leaves appear, you can safely transplant the seedlings into the ground.
It is the reproduction of mock orange by cuttings in the spring that ensures that the plant will definitely take root and will give color for many years in a row. This method is carried out by cutting cuttings from already adult large shoots. It is cuttings with a heel that are considered the best option - this is the planting material that was cut from annual shoots with a piece of last year's twigs.

Experts tell us how to propagate mock orange using cuttings: after cutting, they must be treated with a preparation for root formation, and then planted in containers with a mixture of sand and nutrient soil. Finally, you must not forget that you need to cover the containers with a glass or polyethylene cap, which will help create the effect of greenhouse conditions. Note: cuttings should be sprayed regularly for effective rooting.

How to propagate mock orange by dividing the bush and layering

Reproduction of the mock orange in the spring is also possible with the help of dividing the bush, until the process of sap flow has begun. If you are going to do this fall, wait until the leaf fall ends. In the first and second cases, the plant is dug up and, accordingly, divided into parts, which are quickly planted in different areas. Layering is also considered a very effective way to propagate a shrub. They are literally in 70% of cases well accepted and rooted. This procedure is best done immediately after updating pruning. This is done in the following way:
  • the area under the bush is dug up, necessarily fertilized and leveled;
  • then, with a fishing line, a healthy branch is carefully pulled together near the last bud, carefully placed in a previously dug hole, fixed and sprinkled with earth.

If you want to immediately get a certain number of new plants with strong roots, take not one shoot from the shrub, but as many as you see fit. A year later, next spring, you just need to separate them from the mother bush, dig and grow them within two years.

How to get rid of mock orange pests

Pay attention to the photos of various varieties of mock orange: the greatest threat to these amazing plants is pests - for example, weevils or aphids:

  • The flowers are painted in creamy white undertones and do not exceed 3 cm in diameter. This variety is characterized by a wonderful aroma.
Moreover, given the harsh weather conditions of our territory in winter, the common mock orange is a plant that can withstand even -25 ºC. Among the main species forms of the shrub are terry, loose-leaved, low, golden, large-flowered and silver-striped. The most popular are:

The variety that was bred in 1909 by Emile Lemoine is the virginal mock orange.

Reaches a height of up to 3 m, has a wide crown and shoots with exfoliating bark. Blooms profusely in July. The buds are collected in inflorescences in the form of brushes. The variety retains its decorative effect for 20 years;

Another child Emile Lemoine is Belle Etoile.

Unfortunately, the description of this variety of mock orange is such that in our temperate latitudes the shrub does not grow above one meter. The bush has small leaves with drawn tops and flowers that smell like strawberries. The buds are shaped like bells with a clear rich scarlet spot in the center;

A fluffy shrub that grows up to 2 m in height is called Bicolor mock orange.

It has single flowers. This variety is best suited for landscaping. A curious reader can see in the following photo one of the varieties and types of mock orange - crown mock orange:

  • This magnificent variety has a delicious aroma and charming white flowers. By the way, this shrub was brought to our region from Western Europe. The plant is quite high - up to 3 m. The bush is characterized by flowering in early June for 20 days. Life expectancy is approximately 30 years. By the way, the variety is extremely frost-resistant (up to -25 ºC) and tolerant of polluted air.
The plant can please real connoisseurs with such best forms as:

innosens- shrub, characterized by compact size - up to 2 m in height - and single snow-white, strong-smelling flowers;

Bowles Variety- a variety that is distinguished by leaves that have a wide cream strip along the edges;

aureus- mock orange, which is characterized by a spherical crown and rich yellow leaves that can change their color until the very moment of leaf fall. It reaches a height of up to 3 m. One of those species that is endowed with a divine aroma. Pay attention to the photo of the mock orange variety, the description of which must begin with the fact that this is a real hybrid of ordinary and small-leaved mock oranges:

And this one is called variety - mock orange Lemoine. We have already mentioned it briefly above.

By the way, the plant is most common in North America and Europe. It can reach a height of up to 3 m, and its branches are covered with ovate leaves. Large snow-white buds are collected in inflorescences in the form of brushes. It is worth noting that this hybrid has plenty of "heirs":

Firstly, grade "Ermine Mantle", which can grow up to 1 m. It is covered with elegant white semi-double flowers that can give their wonderful fragrance for a whole month;

It is also impossible not to mention Chubushnik "Schneersturm", which has fragrant pale white buds collected in a brush. Reaches a plant up to 2 m in height;

And here Shrub "Gletcher" with terry large incomparably smelling white flowers grows up to 2 m and blooms for only about three weeks;

The next variety is the real "Charm". Breeders recognize it as one of the most beautiful types of mock orange. The plant is distinguished by huge snow-white flowers, which, alas, are practically odorless. But each Charm bush has a significant drawback - the bare lower part. And so that the aesthetic appearance of your garden is not disturbed, it is recommended to plant some undersized shrub in front of this plant;

One of the most popular flowering shrubs among Siberian gardeners is Chubushnik, often called Garden Jasmine. Photos show all its beauty during flowering. It propagates easily, requires basic care and is widely used in landscape design.

plant description

Mock orange (Philadelphus) is a genus of ornamental flowering deciduous shrubs belonging to the Hortensia family. Motherland - the temperate climate zone of Europe, Asia and North America. The Latin name of the plant was in honor of the Egyptian pharaoh Philadelphus, a big fan of fragrant plants. The Russian version of the name comes from the word "chubuk". This was the name of a part of a pipe for smoking, which in ancient times was made from the trunk of this culture. The hollow stems of mock orange are used to make flutes and pipes. Among gardeners, the common name is more common - "Jasmine Garden" or "False".

Mock orange with simple flowers

The genus Philadelphus includes more than 70 species, several of which grow wild in the Far East and the Caucasus. About 30 species, represented by a variety of garden forms, have found application in horticulture. Mock bushes grow up to 4 m. The leaves are medium-sized, whole, ovoid. The flowers are white or creamy, in racemes or solitary, often very fragrant. Varietal specimens have a terry flower shape. The fruits are small multi-seeded capsules. The plant is an excellent honey plant.

Chubushnik - a variety with double flowers

In Siberia, the height of the bushes is normalized according to the level of snow cover. The plant is able to tolerate frost and air pollution. From year to year, at the beginning of summer, the mock orange looks like a bride, covered with a “veil” of delicate white flowers. At the same time, the whole garden is filled with a charming aroma. Bushes grow in one place for more than ten years.

Species common in Siberia

The duration of flowering mock orange is only a few weeks. A variety of species and bred varieties allows you to enjoy the delicate and fragrant flowers of this bush much longer due to different flowering periods.

Opens the flowering season in Siberia mock orange with white large, slightly fragrant flowers. The height of the bush reaches 3 m. Young shoots are gray, covered with fine pubescence. The bark of adult branches is brown, often covered with cracks and exfoliates from the branches. Leaves up to 10 cm long, petiolate, ovate, sometimes slightly pubescent. The bushes of the thin-leaved mock orange bloom in June.

Mock orange thin-leaved

Chubushnik Schrenk characterized by large flowers and a strong aroma. Blooming in June, the bushes are covered with white flowers for almost a month. In horticulture, many decorative forms of various colors and structures of flowers are grown.

Chubushnik Schrenk

Garden forms are widespread in the South of Siberia Caucasian mock orange. Bushes of this species are tall (up to 3 m). Young shoots of the plant, painted yellow or reddish, look impressive. The flowers are pale cream, collected in long racemose inflorescences of 7-10 pieces, very fragrant.

Chubushnik Caucasian

Blooms for a month from the end of June mock orange crown. Very resistant and common tall species. Flowers up to 4.5 cm in size, light beige, fragrant. Separately, it is worth highlighting the undersized non-flowering form "Nana". The height of the bushes of this form reaches only half a meter.

Chubushnik Crown

From undersized species in Siberia are grown mock orange, blooming in late June. White flowers are solitary, have a sweet strawberry aroma and cover thin branches with a solid carpet. Garden forms have double and semi-double flowers with pink, white or caramel color. Cut flowering shoots retain their decorative effect for a long time.

Chubushnik small-leaved

One of the brightest representatives of the genus in Siberian gardens is mock orange large-flowered. The species name speaks for itself. The size of the flowers reaches 5 cm in diameter. Inflorescences few-flowered (3-5 pieces). Has no smell. The flowering period is July-August.

Mock orange large-flowered

The most spectacular species blooms last - mock orange Lemoine. This is a hybrid of common and small-leaved mock orange. The common (or pale) mock orange itself is not grown in Siberia due to the low threshold of frost resistance. White large fragrant flowers of H. Lemoine bloom in July. There are many garden forms and varieties.

Popular varieties

From the foreign selection of mock orange, one can distinguish such popular varieties and hybrids:

  • Alabaster- famous for its large double fragrant snow-white flowers, collected in inflorescences up to 50 cm long. The branches of the shrub are rigid, 1.5-2 m tall.
  • Belle Etoile- bicolor variety. The flowers are small, white, pink at the base, with a subtle unobtrusive scent of jasmine. Bushes are compact.

Variety Belle Etoile

  • airborne assault- under the weight of numerous simple cream flowers, the branches of the bush droop. Aroma of strawberry.
  • Aurea- has bright yellow foliage. Flowers small, solitary, cream.
  • Avalanche- medium-sized shrub with weeping branches. It blooms very profusely with white simple smallish flowers with a strawberry aroma.

Sort Lavina

N.V. made an invaluable contribution to the development of domestic selection of mock orange. Vekhov. The varieties bred and propagated by him adorn botanical gardens and gardeners' plots throughout Russia.

  • Academician Komarov- a branched low bush with very large snow-white semi-double flowers with a subtle, barely perceptible aroma.
  • blizzard- the height of the bush is about 1 m. The crown is branched. Terry flowers, dense inflorescences. The flowers cover the bush very densely, forming a snow-white blanket.
  • Pompon- small double white flowers are collected in spherical inflorescences resembling pompoms in shape. The bush is compact, the aroma is weak.

Variety Pompom

  • Pearl- the stems are reddish, sprawling, curved, about a meter high. The flowers are snow-white, densely double.
  • Dwarf- a dwarf shrub with a domed crown and small yellowish leaves. Doesn't bloom. Used to decorate green borders.

Breeding technique

Mock-orange is propagated by cuttings, layering or seeds.

green cuttings cut during budding or during flowering. To do this, you need to choose short (up to 10 cm) shoots that do not break when twisted into a ring. At the bottom of the handle, there must be a “heel” (internode). The leaves are cut in half.

Advice. It is better to cut the propagation material in the morning, when they contain the maximum amount of moisture.

It is recommended to root cuttings in greenhouses or on covering beds. Before planting, they should be soaked for a day in a growth stimulator. Next, the cuttings are planted in a peat-sand mixture at a distance of 5-10 cm from each other so that the lower leaves remain on the surface. In the greenhouse, seedlings are constantly sprayed. In about a month, the cuttings will take root. During this period, the shelter is removed, and the seedlings are grown in an open garden.

woody cuttings cut from autumn and stored in a cool room. In the spring they are planted in the garden, leaving 2-3 cm on the surface. The root system develops by autumn, and with it the young shoots.

Mock orange reproduces well by vegetative methods

For layering choose the strongest annual shoots. In the spring, they are added dropwise into narrow grooves, having previously made shallow incisions in the area of the first kidney or tightly pulling this place with copper wire. By autumn, the layers form a rhizome and young growth, which in the spring can be separated from the mother liquor and planted in separate bushes.

seeds mock orange breeds very rarely, due to the loss of varietal qualities. Seeds are buried in the ground in autumn, covering with branches or dry grass. Can be sown in winter on snow. To do this, small grooves are made in the snow at the soil surface, the seeds are laid out, covered with branches and sprinkled with a layer of snow. A bush grown from seeds will bloom only after 6-8 years.

Attention! Seeds propagate only specific mock oranges.

Landing in open ground

Chubushnik prefers sunny areas. It also tolerates shading, but in this case the branches are extended, flowering is more scarce and later. The soil is rich and water-intensive. When the site has high groundwater, a drainage layer of at least 15 cm is required.

For planting mock orange choose sunny places

Planting seedlings is carried out in early autumn or spring, before the leaves bloom. A planting hole is dug about 50 cm deep, depending on the size of the seedling. When planting, only the roots are deepened, the pit is covered with earth, rammed and watered abundantly. The main shoots of the planted bush are immediately shortened so that a beautiful symmetrical crown develops. The shrub blooms in the first year.

Attention! The root neck should not be deepened into the ground, otherwise it may rot. Deepening up to 3 cm is acceptable.

A distance of 0.5-1.5 m is maintained between seedlings. For interlocking plantings, the distance between bushes should not exceed 0.8 m.

Mock orange is very demanding on moisture. During the period of drought, the leaves lose their elasticity, droop, but quickly restore their shape in rain or after heavy watering. After each watering, the soil in the near-stem zone must be deeply loosened, while freeing it from weeds. The trunk circle will not be superfluous to mulch with weathered peat.

Fertilizer and top dressing

Mock orange is very responsive to fertilization. Twice a season, it is necessary to fertilize with slurry, and after flowering, add wood ash under the bush.

Top dressing will help the culture develop better

Three-year-old seedlings, in addition to organics, already need mineral fertilizers. Superphosphate, urea, potash fertilizers are used to saturate the soil with minerals. They are introduced in the form of aqueous solutions.

pruning

Two-, three-year-old seedlings are pruned, forming a crown. Depending on the preferences of the gardener, mock orange bushes form high or squat. In the spring and after flowering, sanitary pruning is carried out, removing frozen, old, growing inside, weak shoots and faded inflorescences. Thickened bushes are thinned out.

Trimmings are very useful for renewing the shrub.

For rejuvenation, the bushes are cut at the root, leaving only a few powerful shoots for renewal.

Diseases and pests

Mock orange is fairly resistant to disease. Of the pests, the plant is affected by:

  • spider mite;
  • aphids;
  • leaf weevil.

leaf weevil

For pest control, both industrial preparations (Fitoverm, Bitoxibacillus, etc.) and folk remedies are used. Against aphids, an infusion of potato green tops, tobacco, and yarrow is used.

Shelter for the winter

Young plants need winter shelter. For these purposes, straw or spruce branches are used. Sometimes only snow cover is enough for wintering. To do this, the bushes are bent to the ground even before the leaves fall, since later the branches will be fragile. If the snow has not completely covered the bush, it should be added until a sufficient covering layer is obtained.

Powerful adult bushes do not need shelter. Sometimes shoots can freeze slightly (especially in varieties with colored and variegated leaves). After spring pruning, they quickly recover.

Chubushnik in landscape design

Use in landscape design

Mock orange is planted both in single plantings and in groups. It looks beautiful in combination with other ornamental shrubs (rose hips, lilacs), roses and conifers. Effective mock orange in the background of a flower bed with perennials. Low-growing and dwarf varieties are planted in rockeries and rock gardens, as a tapeworm on the lawn, as well as near artificial reservoirs. Mock bushes are used to build hedges. Mock orange is also popular in landscaping city streets and parks.

The unusually beautiful flowering and pleasant aroma of mock orange made it a favorite among gardeners, especially since it is quite simple to grow it.

Flowering mock orange: photo

Plant mock orange (lat. Philadelphus), or garden jasmine, belongs to the genus of deciduous and semi-deciduous shrubs of the Hortensia family. We used to call the mock orange flower jasmine for the characteristic sweetish aroma and the similarity of the flowers of these two plants. The Latin name mock-orange-philadelphus was given in honor of the king of Egypt, Ptolemy Philadelphus, and it is called mock-orange because its strong wood with a soft core was used to make chibouks and mouthpieces for smoking pipes. In the wild, the mock orange shrub is common in North America, Europe and East Asia. According to various sources, there are from 50 to 70 species of mock orange in nature, and a large number of varieties of this plant have been bred in culture.

Chubushnik shrub - description

Numerous stems of all shrubs of this genus are covered with thin gray bark. In young shoots, the bark is mostly brown, exfoliating. The wood of the mock orange is hard, the core is wide. Simple leaves are from 2 to 7 cm long, depending on the species, elongated, ovate or broadly ovate. Usually fragrant, simple, semi-double or double mock orange flowers, collected in a brush, are formed at the ends of young shoots. The fruit of the mock orange is a three- to five-sided box with small seeds. Mock orange garden is winter-hardy, however, each type of plant, depending on the climatic conditions of the growing area, behaves differently. Nevertheless, even if in a harsh winter the mock orange bush suffers greatly from frost, then only its ground part will die, and if you cut it in the spring, then, thanks to the powerful root system of the plant, the mock orange will grow very quickly and restore its decorative effect.

Planting mock orange

When to plant mock orange

Mock orange is planted in open sunny areas, where it will bloom luxuriantly and smell fragrant. In the shade, the flowers of the shrub bloom small, and the shoots are too long. The optimal soil composition for mock orange is humus, sand and leafy soil in a ratio of 1: 2: 3, and if the soil on the site does not have good water permeability, then a drainage layer is added to the pit during planting. It is better to plant mock orange in autumn, from mid-September to mid-October. You can plant a mock orange in the spring, but planting a mock orange in the spring is complicated by the fact that you need to have time to do this until the buds open on the trees.

How to plant mock orange

If you are planting several bushes, then dig holes at a distance of 50 to 150 cm, depending on how the adult plant will be. If you decide to plant a hedge of mock orange, then the seedlings are planted at a distance of 50-70 cm from each other. A drainage layer of broken brick and sand 15 cm thick is poured into a pit measuring 60x60x60, then a layer of soil mixture, the composition of which is described in the previous section. It is advisable to do this a week or two before planting the mock orange. When the soil settles, the root of the seedling is immersed in the pit so that its root collar is flush with the surface of the site, then the pit is covered with fertile soil. After planting, mock orange seedlings are abundantly moistened, pouring 2-3 buckets of water under each. When the earth settles after watering, add dry earth to the wells. It does not matter if, after precipitation, the root collar sinks into the soil by 3 cm, but this is the maximum safe depth - with a deeper penetration of the root collar, it may rot. A day or two after planting, mulch the near-stem circle of the seedling with peat or sawdust in a layer of 3-4 cm.

Care for mock orange

How to care for a mock orange

If the plant lacks moisture, its leaves will tell you about it. Mock oranges do not tolerate drought well, and in the hottest time of summer, their leaves lose their turgor and hang without sufficient watering. It is recommended to water the mock orange weekly with two or three buckets of water, and during the flowering period, watering will have to be done almost daily. After moistening the soil on the site, you need to loosen the soil around the bushes and remove the weeds. We remind you: if you mulched the site in the spring, then you will have to water, loosen and weed the soil much less often. As for the nutrition of the mock orange, it responds best to the application of slurry (in a ratio of 1:10) - one bucket of this fertilizer is poured once a year under each adult bush of the mock orange, and it is advisable to do this in the spring. After flowering, the mock orange is fertilized with wood ash, scattering it around the trunk circle before watering. From the fourth year of life, spring fertilizing with complex mineral fertilizers can be carried out at the rate of 30 g of superphosphate, 15 g of urea and the same amount of potassium sulfate per bucket of water, which should be enough for two adult bushes. After flowering, 15 g of potassium sulfate and 25 g of superphosphate are applied per 1 m² of plot. Potassium can be replaced by scattering 100-150 g of wood ash under each bush. Nitrogen fertilizers are applied only in spring.

Pruning mock orange

If you want to see lush mock orange blossoms every year, you need to trim it regularly. The peculiarity of the plant is that only strong shoots of the last year bloom profusely, and if flowers appear on thin and weak old branches, then in much smaller quantities, and the bush looks disheveled because of this. Therefore, after the mock orange blossoms, you need to cut off the faded branches to the strong shoots of this year, which are located below. Please note: over time, the young growths of this year become more powerful, which means that next year you can expect abundant flowering from them. Pruning the mock orange in the fall also provides for sanitary clearing of the bush: the branches and shoots that thicken the crown are removed, as well as dry, painful or broken ones. Once every three years, remove shoots that are older than 12 years. Anti-aging pruning is done in early spring: several trunks are shortened to 30 cm, the rest are cut to the soil level. Slices are treated with garden pitch, the soil around the shrub is mulched with peat. By autumn, strong young shoots will grow from sleeping buds. But before you cut the mock orange, make sure that the sap flow has not yet begun.

Mock orange transplant

The mock orange tolerates transplantation easily, especially if you take this procedure responsibly, but you will have to sacrifice its lush crown and thereby lose a year of flowering. First you need to prepare a hole for the bush - two weeks before the transplant, so that the earth settles. Then you need to water the bush that you are going to transplant abundantly, after a day, remove half of the old shoots under the root, and shorten the rest. Now you can dig up the bush and move it to a new place, not forgetting to water it thoroughly after transplanting. The dates when mock orange can be transplanted coincide with the dates of its primary planting - from mid-September to mid-October or in spring, while the buds have not yet opened. However, transplanting a mock orange in the fall is much more convenient in the sense that you are not running out of time, which means you can do this work better.

Pests and diseases of mock orange

Among the few enemies of mock orange are bean aphids, spider mites and green leaf weevil. Aphids are destroyed by treating the bushes with Karbofos or Rogor in accordance with the instructions. In the fight against spider mites, such means as a three-percent emulsion of Keltan or a two-percent solution of Phosphamide, which are treated with mock orange bushes two to three times at weekly intervals, have proven themselves well. And the larvae and beetles of the weevil die from spraying with Chlorophos.

Chubushnik in Siberia and Moscow region

Readers often ask questions about which mock orange is more suitable for the Moscow region and whether this plant can be grown in Siberia. Mock orange is not at all a capricious plant, moreover, it is frost-resistant, so there are no big differences in the conditions of its cultivation in the southern regions or in the Moscow region. As for Siberia, there are winter-hardy cultivars with a viable root system that can withstand frosts down to -35 ºC without shelter! And given that there is always a lot of snow in Siberia, you don’t have to worry about the wintering of less hardy species and varieties.

Reproduction of mock orange

How to propagate mock orange

Planting and caring for a mock orange is simple and easy, and the methods for propagating garden jasmine will not seem complicated to you either. Mock orange reproduces generatively (by seeds) and vegetatively - by dividing the bush, cuttings and layering. And although seed propagation in the case of mock orange is much easier than with other plants, varietal mock oranges are propagated vegetatively, since seedlings do not always inherit the characteristics of their parents.

Seed propagation of mock orange

Before sowing, mock orange seeds need a two-month stratification at a temperature of 2-3 ºC. To do this, they are mixed with wet sand and peat in January, placed in a container and kept until spring in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. In March, the seeds are sown in boxes filled with a soil mixture of leafy soil, humus and peat in a ratio of 1: 1: 2 with the addition of half of the sand, sprinkled with sand on top and covered with glass. The soil is kept in a slightly damp state, using a sprayer for irrigation - crops will have to be sprayed two to three times a day. After a week and a half, expect shoots and, as soon as they develop a few leaves, transplant the seedlings into open ground, constructing protection from the sun for them for the first time.

Propagation of mock orange by green cuttings

This method of reproduction is the most reliable, because it gives one hundred percent rooting. Cuttings are cut from developed large shoots, but growth shoots with a wide hollow core and a large distance between the kidneys should not be taken for this, since there is a high probability of development of putrefactive processes in these cavities. The best planting material is green cuttings with a heel - annual shoots with part of the last year's shoot. A cut of the cutting with a heel is treated with a root-forming preparation, planted in containers with a mixture of nutrient soil and sand to a depth of 0.5 cm according to the 40x10 scheme, covered with a plastic or glass cap to create greenhouse conditions and placed under diffused light. During rooting, the cuttings need frequent spraying.

Reproduction of mock orange by layering

Layers of the mock orange are formed easily, the percentage of their rooting is also very high - 50-70%. It is best to propagate mock orange by layering after rejuvenating pruning, when the bush is cut at a height of 5-7 cm from the surface level. The soil around the bush is dug up, fertilized and leveled. A young shoot is pulled near the lower bud with a soft wire, placed in a pre-dug groove 1.5 cm deep, fixed and added dropwise. You can thus take several shoots from one bush, placing them radially, and by the end of the growing season you will have several plants with a powerful root system. The following spring, they are separated from the mother plant, dug up and grown for another two years.

Reproduction of mock orange by dividing the bush

In the spring before the start of sap flow or in the fall after leaf fall, the overgrown mock orange is dug up, divided into several parts and quickly planted in new places so that the delenki do not have time to dry out. During the division of the bush, the old branches that thicken the bush are removed, and the young shoots are dug up.

Garden mock orange in winter

Mock orange in autumn (preparation for winter)

In autumn, after flowering, the mock orange is subjected to sanitary and thinning pruning, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are applied to the soil, and the soil around the bush is mulched with a thick layer of peat or sawdust.

Wintering mock orange

The mock orange hibernates without shelter, and although severe frosts sometimes damage the tops of young shoots, in the spring, after pruning, the mock orange starts growing with renewed vigor. In winter, the care of the mock orange is not required.

Types and varieties of mock orange

In culture, several types of mock orange and many varieties bred by breeders are grown.

Mock orange or pale (Philadelphus pallidus)

originally from the south of Western Europe and the Caucasus. It is this species that is the first of the mock oranges to bloom in the Moscow region. The height of the common mock orange can reach 3 m, its shoots are erect, bare. Leaves up to 8 cm long are simple, oblong, elliptical, with sparse serrations along the edges and a pointed apex; the upper side of the leaf is bare, bright green, the lower side is pubescent, pale green. White-cream flowers up to 3 cm in diameter with a strong pleasant aroma are collected in 5-7 pieces in racemose inflorescences. The species is winter-hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -25 ºC. It has several decorative forms: golden, large-flowered, terry, silver-edged, willow and low. Of the varieties more popular than others:

  • mock orange Virginal- a variety created by Lemoine in 1909, 2 to 3 m high, with a wide crown, brown shoots and exfoliating bark. Leaves up to 7 cm long, pointed, oval, dark green, yellow in autumn. It blooms in July with racemose inflorescences up to 14 cm long from white double flowers up to 5 cm in diameter. The decorativeness of this variety lasts up to 20 years;
  • mock orange Belle Etoile- the main achievement of Emile Lemoine as a breeder. In our conditions, a bush of this variety rarely grows above a meter, although in France it grows one and a half times higher. The leaves of this variety are with a drawn top, small; flowers with a strawberry aroma, simple, bell-shaped, with a large carmine spot in the middle, reach a diameter of 4 cm;
  • mock orange Bicolor- has single flowers crowning the lateral axillary shoot and reaching a diameter of 5 cm. The bush is fluffy, height - up to 2 m. This variety is often used in landscaping.

Crown mock orange (Philadelphus coronarius)

- a South European species up to 3 m high, found naturally in the Caucasus, Asia Minor and Southern Europe. It has yellowish or reddish-brown young shoots with cracked bark and dense foliage. The leaves are opposite, oval, with sparse teeth along the edges, petiolate, bare on the upper side of the plate, pubescent along the veins on the lower side. Fragrant creamy flowers up to 5 cm in diameter are collected in racemose terminal inflorescences of 5-7 pieces. This species blooms up to three weeks. Smoke-, gas-, cold-resistant - withstands frosts down to -25 ºC. The best varieties:

  • aureus- a fast-growing shrub 2-3 m high with a spherical crown of bright yellow leaves that turn yellow-green by summer and remain so until leaf fall. Numerous flowers against the background of leaves are almost indistinguishable, but the fact that the bush has bloomed can be determined even from afar by its amazing aroma. The value of the variety is represented by a leaf of a mock orange of unusual color and a strong aroma of its flowers;
  • Variegatus, or Bowles Variety- a shrub up to 3 m high with a creamy wide uneven strip along the edges of the leaves;
  • innosens- a compact shrub of medium size - no higher than 2 m - with single white simple flowers and a strong aroma. Leaves in uneven cream spots.

Lemoine mock orange (Philadelphus x lemoinei)

- a hybrid between small-leaved mock orange and common mock orange. In culture, it is widely distributed in Europe and North America. This species reaches a height of 3 m, it has sprawling branches with ovate lanceolate leaves up to 4 cm long and large white fragrant flowers collected in brushes of 3-7 pieces. This hybrid has many varieties that have received the widest popularity among professionals and amateurs:

  • Ermine Mantle (Manto d "Ermine)- a bush not higher than 1 m with elegant semi-double white flowers, blooming profusely for up to a month and a half;
  • mock orange Schneersturm- this is a girl's mock orange with fragrant white flowers with a diameter of 2-2.5 cm, collected in a brush; the leaves are large, dark green, turning yellow in autumn. Bush up to 2 m high;
  • Glacier- Terry mock orange with bunches of large fragrant white flowers that bloom for about three weeks; bush up to 2 m high;
  • Charm- one of the most beautiful mock oranges: densely double large snow-white flowers, almost odorless, collected in inflorescences of 9 or more pieces on a bush up to 2 m high. The disadvantage of this variety is that its lower part is exposed, therefore, to restore professionals recommend planting a low-growing shrub in front of him;
  • mock orange snowstorm- a bush up to 2 m high; Terry white flowers are collected in inflorescences of 7-9 pieces and bloom profusely for about three weeks.

The Philadelphus mock orange from the Hortensia family can be found almost throughout the Earth in the northern hemisphere, although Greece is considered to be its homeland. The origin of the name of the shrub is even more interesting and it is associated with the Greek province.

Local residents have mastered the craft associated with the manufacture of smoking pipes, and according to the name of the province - chibouks. And although with such a shrub as jasmine, mock orange is similar only in visual terms, gardeners do not want to give up their erroneous opinion, continuing to call mock orange jasmine.

How to plant a mock orange

In order for the shrub to be able to show all its beauty, first of all, they determine a suitable place for it.

If the selected area is swampy and shady, he is unlikely to like it.

In such conditions, it will stretch strongly in search of sunlight, push back the timing of flowering.

And in the worst case, it will disappear from excess moisture. Therefore, it is so important to select a place on the sunny side of the site, with soil without signs of waterlogging.

  1. You need to start by preparing a hole for garden jasmine. Its dimensions completely depend only on the volume of the root of the bush. Small shrubs are usually planted, for which a pit measuring 60 x 60 x 60 is considered the most suitable.
  2. If you are thinking about planting a mock orange as an element of a hedge or in composition with other ornamental shrubs, you cannot ignore such an indicator as the maximum size of the jasmine crown. When planting a plant to create a hedge, the distance between the bushes is maintained at a rate of 0.7 m. With a composite planting, this figure doubles and is 1.5 meters.
  3. Before you start planting a plant, you need to start preparing the soil. It should contain 1 share of sand, 2 shares of humus and 3 shares of leafy soil. Before you plant a plant, you should dig it with prepared soil so that the roots do not wind. It is also important to take care of the drainage, the height of which from the bottom of the pit should be at least 15 cm.
  4. When planting a mock orange, they carefully monitor the root neck. It shouldn't be very deep. The depth limit of the root neck is 2 cm from the surface. If this condition is ignored, the jasmine may die from its decay.

How to care for mock orange in the garden

Garden jasmine does not require a scrupulous attitude. One has only to give him the very minimum of time, as he will thank with even more magnificent flowering. We will tell you more below.

How, how and when to feed the mock orange

Only once a year, in late spring, one bucket of diluted slurry infusion is brought under the jasmine bush. To do this, take 1 part of slurry and 10 parts of water. Starting from the second year, in addition to manure, fertilizing with mineral fertilizers is added.

It includes:

  • urea, in the amount of 15 gr,
  • potassium sulfate - 15 gr
  • and superphosphate in the amount of 20 grams.

All these components are bred in a bucket of water, which is enough to feed 2 adult plants. This procedure is recommended to be carried out annually with the beginning of the growing season, in the spring. After the flowering of jasmine, urea is excluded from the top dressing, while adding wood ash.

In a bucket of water they dilute:

  • 15 grams of potassium sulfate,
  • 30 gr of superphosphate, wood ash 100 gr.
  • This solution is enough for 1 m² of land.

How to water a mock orange

During planting, from 10 to 20 liters of water are poured under, depending on the size of the bush. Then another 30 liters of water are distributed to water the plant in the first 2 summer months.

Garden jasmine is quite enough of the moisture that enters the ground with precipitation and morning dew. Only in dry periods it is sometimes necessary to water the shrub abundantly, but without stagnant water.

How to cut mock orange after flowering

Even at the very beginning, before planting, it is necessary to inspect the bush, remove all branches that interfere
the formation of a beautiful crown. Leave branches with two or three healthy buds at the base of the bush. The rest must be removed.

A year later, after the mock orange has faded, an inspection is carried out. They do this in order to eliminate weak branches and those that have undergone a degenerative process. They are removed until the beginning of growth. In the third year and subsequent (after flowering), the branches are cut to the part of the growth on which flowering was observed. If the pruning rules are violated during the sanitary cutting of the bush, up to 25% of dead and old branches are removed. Each subsequent year it will be easier to trim and form the crown of the jasmine bush.

How to propagate mock orange

For reproduction, plants use one of the 4 proposed methods:

  • dividing the bush
  • layering
  • cuttings
  • seeds

The plant tolerates any type of reproduction well and gardeners have no difficulties with this. When choosing one or another method, you need to know that using the seed of a shrub for breeding, jasmine flowering can only be observed 3 years after planting.

Propagation of mock orange cuttings

You can propagate mock orange by cuttings in several ways:

  • using annual cuttings cut in early spring, before the start of the growing season;
  • using cuttings cut in autumn.
  • green cuttings.

Further actions will depend on which cuttings are used for transplantation.

How to root cuttings cut in autumn

  • Cut cuttings are stored until spring. To do this, use the basement, where
    zero temperature is maintained.
  • With the onset of spring, prepared cuttings are placed in pits with sandy soil. In this case, a pair of upper buds should remain above the ground.
  • By autumn, a full-fledged root will form.
  • The next spring, when the stalk comes out of dormancy, it is cut off. They do this in order to give way to the development of young shoots.
  • In the fall, an already fully formed young bush is transplanted to a permanent place specially designated for it.

How to root cuttings of garden jasmine cut in spring video

  • Cuttings are cut only from the healthiest and strongest branches. As for their length, then, approximately, 6 - 8 centimeters is enough. Each cut cutting should have a pair of leaves and an internode.
  • In order for such a cutting to form a root, it is placed in greenhouse conditions, planted in prepared soil rich in humus, soddy soil and sand.
  • Cutting depth - 1 cm.
  • After planting, the cuttings are sprayed several times a day. They do this so that it takes root faster. Approximately, the period of rooting of the cutting is 2 - 2.5 months.
  • Hardening of a young plant is one of the important stages carried out after the rooting of the cutting. To do this, they begin to open the doors of the greenhouse in the evening hours. For the winter, hardened, with a formed root system, cuttings are added dropwise in open ground from the leeward side.

The cuttings are transplanted to a temporary place by May, and the plant can only count on a permanent place of growth in three years.

Reproduction of mock orange by layering

In order for the process of reproduction of mock orange by layering to be successful, the most beautiful and healthy bushes are selected in advance, cutting them to the ground in spring. Instead of old branches during the growing season, young flexible and pliable shoots will begin to emerge.

The next spring, before the first leaves appear, a wire harness is applied to the flexible stem at a distance of 1 cm to the lower bud. After thickening, the stem sprouts roots. It is they who become part of the single root system of the new bush. As soon as the first signs of rooting of the stem appear, it is tilted and sprinkled with nutrient soil.

During the season they spud a couple of times and do not forget about watering. To start separating this stalk of mock orange should only be with the onset of calendar autumn. Carefully ensure that it is well rooted and has new shoots. It is better not to transplant it immediately to a new place, but to arrange it in a temporary bed so that it becomes strong and hardy. After a couple of years, the mock orange will be ready for transplanting to a new (permanent) place.

How to propagate garden jasmine by dividing the bush

Large jasmine bushes cannot be handled with this type of reproduction. A young shrub is very good. It is not difficult to extract it from the ground and do all the operations for dividing the bush.

At the first stage, the bush is dug up and carefully freed from clods of earth, so that it is clearly visible in which place it is preferable to divide it. It is important to carry out this procedure correctly, even if the bush is not divided in half. Look more at how the root system develops. When dividing, try not to harm the plant.

It is better to engage in dividing the bush in the autumn (for the middle lane - this is October). Some experimental gardeners are not averse to dividing the bush in the summer. This is also possible. Just make sure that these manipulations do not coincide with the flowering period of the plant. Despite the fact that the transplant takes place in the hot summer time, new jasmine bushes are still planted in sunny places in accordance with the requirements of the plant itself.

Growing mock orange from seeds

And this breeding method requires special knowledge, the right approach, which boils down to the following:

  • Purchased or those seeds that were collected on the site after ripening are sown in early spring in late February - early March;
  • Before sowing, prepare the soil, which should contain 3 components: peat chips, sand and humus;
  • Seeds for planting are placed in an elastic stocking, lowering it for 3 (or more) hours into a special solution consisting of water and a growth stimulator;
  • Then the seeds right in this stocking are placed in sawdust for a couple of days;
  • After 2 days, the seeds are removed from the stocking and dried.
  • Since the earth in the containers has already been prepared in advance, it remains only to make grooves, slightly moisten the soil and plant the seeds at a distance of 5 cm from each other. Sprinkling peat on top, moisten it again and wait for the first shoots to appear;
  • When the first two or three true leaves appear, the plants dive into separate cups and grow on the windowsill or balcony to a height of 20-30 cm.
  • Watering should be moderate, monitoring the humidity and preventing the earthen clod from drying out.

Before planting in the ground, the seedlings are hardened by taking them out into the fresh air. Gradually, the plants get used to the natural environment and can remain painlessly on the street during the day. So you can leave young bushes in a shady place in the garden until autumn. In the absence of a threat of frost, seedlings are planted in the garden in a warm autumn, covered with spruce branches or a thick layer of leaves for the winter.

How to transplant mock orange garden jasmine

Not only for its powerful snow-white flowering, but also for its good ability to adapt after transplantation, garden jasmine is valued by numerous admirers. For transplanting plants use any time except for the flowering period. If the transplant is carried out in the spring, then this year the jasmine will not please anyone with its flowering.

When transplanting, the following actions are carried out:

  • a jasmine bush is filled with water, in excess, so that it is easier to dig it out of the ground;
  • while the earth is saturated with water, pruning is carried out: old ones, including last year's branches, are cut off completely, while young ones are slightly shortened;
  • then they dig up a bush and transplant it to a new place.

At least 2 buckets of settled water will be needed to water the transplanted bush. After that, the ground around the plant is sprinkled with a layer of humus as a mulch.

Why mock orange does not bloom Pests and diseases

Among the pests that can spoil the appearance of jasmine, the most common are spider mites, insects of the aphid family and green leaf weevil. With the help of insecticides, you can get rid of them. During the spring and autumn processing of the bush, it is best to use karbofos in accordance with the instructions.

Mock orange may not bloom for the following reasons:

  1. Incorrectly chosen place for the growth of shrubs. Shady places negatively affect the plant and should be transplanted.
  2. The soil does not meet the requirements, the land is severely depleted. You should dig and transplant a jasmine bush into the soil necessary for its normal growth and flowering. Only fertile breathable soil, with timely fertilizing with mineral components, organic matter will be suitable.
  3. Jasmine does not like strong waterlogging. In areas where it is too damp, it is not recommended to plant mock orange. Installing a good drainage system to drain water from the ground will be the ideal way out of this situation. Sometimes a thick layer of drainage 15-20 cm, in a pit for planting a crop, helps to cope with this problem.
  4. The shrub is not fertilized according to the rules, an excess of nitrogen is introduced. If you follow all the requirements, the problem will disappear by itself.
  5. Both excessive watering and lack of moisture greatly affect the condition of the plant. During the period of drought, additional watering of the crop is organized, otherwise the plant will not only not bloom, but may also die.
  6. When planting or transplanting a shrub to another place, make sure that the root collar is not deepened by more than 2 cm. Otherwise, it will prop up, which will lead to its decay and, as a result, the growth of the plant will be inhibited.

How to care for jasmine in autumn and winter

Jasmine needs care with the onset of calendar autumn, so it is important:

  • feed the shrub with mineral fertilizers;
  • water if necessary;
  • pruning damaged, old and dry branches.

How to Prepare a Jasmine Shrub for Winter Dormancy

  • in autumn it is necessary to pay attention to mock orange, whose age does not exceed 1 year. He needs increased protection from the winter cold. With the help of dense warm batting, young bushes are covered, tied with twine;
  • in the area of \u200b\u200bthe root system, leafy humus is scattered on the soil surface.
  • in winter, especially after heavy snowfalls, the bushes are freed from the snow cap.
  • with the onset of the end of winter and at the beginning of spring, it is also recommended to throw snow from the crown of the bush.

Chubushnik in landscape design

Designers have found many ways to use white jasmine bushes to update
area adjacent to the house.

You can often see:

  • jasmine bushes as a hedge;
  • as an element in the decoration of alleys;
  • will attract attention as a lonely standing flowering bush;
  • in a single composition with other plants, for example, with roses, hydrangeas;
  • as a symmetrical geometric pattern in the landscape area of a summer cottage;
  • in a themed garden.

What can be said in conclusion

Be sure to plant a mock orange in your area. Let it be not one species, but several, and then the whole summer you will enjoy the flowering of this unpretentious shrub. The unique combination of the color of green foliage and the color of the whitest jasmine flowers contributes to the harmonization of space and peace of mind.

Types of mock orange with a description and photo

Gardeners fell in love with the following types of this culture, which have become very popular when decorating summer cottages:

  • Jasmine virginia;
  • Chubushnik crown,
  • Chubushnik lemoine.

Any kind of snow-white mock orange is able to decorate a garden plot, create a festive atmosphere. As for planting and caring for the plant, it will not be difficult because of its absolute unpretentiousness.

Mock orange Philadelphus coronarius

Mock orange crown is also called ordinary mock orange. The maximum height that is quite achievable by the plant is 3.5 m, while it will grow up to 2 meters in diameter. On the reddish hue of the shoots are light green leaves of a pointed shape.

Somewhere at the end of May, the mock orange blooms its flowers and pleases the eye for 1 month. Five-petal flowers have a creamy hue, a very pleasant aroma. Not pretentious, grows on any soil, is resistant to gusty winds, does not freeze out in severe frosts. Very often, ordinary mock orange is used by designers in the design of the landscape.

Mock orange or girlish Philadelphus x virginalis

Mock orange philadelphus x virginalis ‘minnesota snowflake’ photo

Virginia jasmine is obtained by crossing the small-leaved and evergreen mock orange species. In garden plots it grows up to 3 meters tall. Oval leaves, 7-8 cm long, together with brown shoots form the crown of the shrub. From mid-summer, it begins to bloom, releasing snow-white inflorescences, consisting of flowers with a terry type of petal. Flowers reach 5 cm in diameter. With a favorable set of circumstances, in early September, the second flowering of virgin jasmine for the season is observed.

Lemoine mock orange Philadelphus × lemoinei

Lemoine mock orange differs from its counterparts in that it has small ovoid leaves. The crown of the bush is dense, sprawling. Reaches up to 2.5 meters (diameter). The flower petals are terry at the end. It seems that with the onset of the flowering time of the lemoine mock orange, which falls on the month of June, its leaves begin to hide behind snow-white flowers. A huge white ball is formed, which some time ago was completely green. Jasmine of this species is characterized by the fact that it can also be two-colored. A purple-pink core with golden stamens peeps through its snow-white petals.

Surely, many of you paid attention in the parks to the beautifully smelling shrubs with cute white flowers. That's how he looked to me. In full confidence that this is, I went shopping. It turned out that the real name of this plant is, or, as gardeners also call it, "garden jasmine." It turns out that this is the most popular shrub that blooms in early and mid-summer, it belongs to the Hortensia family.

Most types of mock orange are with small leaves and thin stems covered with gray or brown bark. They love the sun very much, but at the same time they are shade-tolerant. The fruits of the mock orange are small boxes with seeds, in appearance a little less than a centimeter. Many species, as it turned out, grow well in very moist soils, even in the presence, but do not tolerate when the moisture is constant and stagnates. Temporary drought is generally well tolerated, resistant to smoke. Depending on the species, mock orange blooms from late May to early August.

It turns out that not all varieties of mock orange smell so divinely, there are species that are completely odorless or with a very subtle, barely noticeable aroma. So, armed with basic knowledge, I rushed in search of "my" bush, and along the way I got acquainted with the most popular and favorite species among Russian gardeners.

Types of mock orange

Mock orange crown

It was his smell that so won my heart in the park. This is a tall shrub up to 3 m tall, which came to our country from the south of Western Europe. It has incredibly fragrant white flowers and large leaves, carved along the edge.

Blooms in the first half of June for almost 20 days. It grows quickly and lives up to 30 years. It has many garden forms, characterized by beautiful foliage.

Chubushnik Schrenk

This type of mock orange is the first to bloom in our lane. He came to us from the Far East, from Korea and China.

The leaves are oval, rather like an egg, narrowed upwards. The flowers are large, very delicate smell, about 4 cm in diameter, but they are collected in inflorescences of 9 flowers. This species is very cold-resistant, can withstand frosts down to -25 ° C. It begins to bloom in early June and blooms for about 25 days.

Odorless mock orange

It grows as a bush with large green shoots, the leaves are large, up to 7 cm long, and on non-flowering shoots they can reach 12 cm. The flowers are white, odorless, about 5 cm, collected in brushes of 5 flowers. High, up to 4 m.

It stands out for its width - up to 3 m. It begins to bloom at the end of June, when you look at these sky-white flowers, it seems that their shape resembles a square with many stamens. Blooms for about 30 days.

Gordon's mock orange

One of the tallest species. The height of the bush can reach 4 m, and if the shrub grows in the shade, then 5-6 m. This species is the most decorative because of the large, glossy, bright green shiny leaves and pure white, up to 4.5 cm, flowers.

It blooms in the second half of June, has a weak, thin, barely noticeable aroma.

Chubushnik fluffy

Its lower leaves seem to be airy (fluffy). The flowers almost do not smell, but they are large, have a beautiful “calyx” shape and are collected in large inflorescences of 5-10 pieces.

They bloom from the second half of July to the beginning of August. The bush is high, up to 3 m.

Selectively bred garden types of mock orange

The most famous varieties: "Arctic", "Ballet Motylkov", "Unusual", "Air Assault", "Pearl", "Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya", "Akademik Komarov".

My heart was given to "Airborne" - a bush about 2 m tall with a delicate aroma and flowers in the form of many bells on the branches, perfect for creating a hedge.

Chubushnik "Airborne"

Number 2 for my garden - "Unusual":

Chubushnik "Unusual"

This is a low bush about 1.5 m high, in the center of the flower there is a purple bright spot, and it emits an incredible smell, especially noticeable in the night air, thick from the heat of the day.

You can choose mock oranges for your garden in our catalog, which contains offers from various garden online stores. .

Chubushnik takes root best during autumn planting, this is somewhere from September 10 to October 10. But if you really want to plant it in the spring, you need to do it until the leaves bloom, otherwise it may die. When planting, make sure that only the root falls into the ground, and not the stem, otherwise there is a risk of decay. Planting depth - about 50 cm. The distance between shrubs should be from 0.5 to 1.5 m. If you want, then you need to plant at a distance of 0.5 to 0.8 m in well-lit places. After planting, water with 1-2 buckets of water.

Reproduction of mock orange

The mock orange is propagated by dividing the roots or, during the flowering period, by cuttings with young green bark. They are planted in a place specially prepared for them. They take longer to take root.

Also, mock orange can be propagated by seeds, but at the same time, the bushes will bloom no earlier than after 5 or 8 years. Seeds can be planted in autumn, and in spring, and even in winter - in prepared furrows in the snow. Such a planting is usually covered with straw or dry branches, and removed when spring arrives. The sprouts that appear are covered from direct sun, but do not isolate from sunlight at all. In the fall, they are sown in a prepared ridge, such as, for example. In the spring they are usually sown in, but first they saturate the seeds with moisture, like many seedlings:

  • in a nylon sock, they are lowered into water to start the germination process;
  • then placed in sawdust or other similar substance that retains moisture;
  • swollen seeds are dried and planted, adding a little sand and.

Care for mock orange

Proper care of a mock orange is to:
  • choose a sunny place for him;
  • good soil;
  • ensure sufficient hydration;
  • regularly remove old and dead, inward, broken branches.
After planting, you need weak branches and shorten the main branches, this will help increase the number of buds and make the crown beautiful and symmetrical. The shrub blooms immediately in the year of planting.

Immediately after flowering, weak branches should be cut off, allowing new and stronger ones to develop. In October, young lateral branches will appear on these strong branches, which will bear flowers for the next year. In the third year of flowering, young branches have already gained strength, and in order to give them more space and get more flowers, old stems are cut to the ground.

Feeding and watering

The following year after planting, they add to the soil: 30 g, 15 g, 15 g of potassium sulfide are diluted per 10 liters of water, this amount falls on 1 or 2 small bushes.

At all times, slurry has been an excellent fertilizer; every year, mock orange bushes are watered with it. Usually one bucket is enough in a ratio of 1:10. After the bush has faded, it needs to be fed with wood (I added the ashes that remained from the fire in which dry branches of birch, plum, and apple trees burned). During flowering, the bushes require enhanced watering: 20-30 liters of water daily.
