Auction numismatists. How and where to sell coins

Sooner or later, every numismatist faces the question of where and how it is more profitable to sell or buy a coin. Of course, the easiest way is to go to the market, to the numismatic store or to the places where collectors gather. But this was true 20 years ago - today auctions are leading, including those held on the Internet.

Of course, in this case (as in any other) there may be a risk of buying a fake, so we conducted a study and prepared a review of the most famous and reputable auctions.

Coin store "IMPERIAL"

It all started in 2001, when the first full-fledged printed catalog of coins with prices appeared, released by the Konros publishing house. At the same time, the auction house was going to start developing its own Internet site, but at first it remained not particularly visited for a long time. At that time, the first large Russian Internet trading platform molotok.ru (now closed) ruled the Internet. Finally, by the end of 2002, after a series of weekly online auctions, https://auction.conros.ru/ became a truly sought-after and popular resource among numismatists.

Today, all coins offered by Konros as lots, and after the sale, go to the new owner with a guarantee of authenticity from the trading house. Today, this Internet resource gathers about 2500-3000 unique Internet users every day, which indicates its relevance and popularity.

To participate in the auction, you need to register, indicating the exact postal address with an index and a contact phone number, after checking the data, you will be given the opportunity to bid on the current auction. The commission from the buyer is 10-15% of the price of the lot at the end of the auction, the seller is charged 15% of the sale price of the lot. In addition to weekly Internet auctions, Konros also conducts monthly and semi-annual (the latter are held in St. Petersburg) auctions.

Auction «Wolmar»

It offers 2 types of auctions: VIP - for investment, rare, collectible coins, as well as awards and medals (the cost of the lot is over 1000 rubles). For inexpensive coins of different countries and periods, Standard auctions are organized. In both cases both the seller and the buyer are charged a commission of 10%. You can also sell antiques here - separate auctions are organized for this.

Auction "Efimok"

Volmar's main rival is also operating since 2006.

He held more than 180 auctions, to participate in the auction you need to be over 18 years old and pre-register on the website www.efimok.ru, be sure to indicate a contact phone number and postal address. The final price of the lot includes the cost, commission (10%) and postage.

Auction "Hermes"

Working on the Internet since 2010 and very well established among numismatists.

Auction "Numismatist"

Internet project www.numismat.ru also holds auctions for more than 90 times.

Here they accept materials for bidding 2.5 months before they are held, after which a very high-quality color catalog of lots is prepared. The commission is 15% of the total cost of the lot reached as a result of the auction. You can also sell medals here.

Auction «NumizRus»

The price of the lot includes the maximum bid, commission (10%) and shipping costs. You can pay and pick up the won lot at the Moscow office. Delivery is carried out only on the territory of the Russian Federation. Lots are sent to the buyer after 100% prepayment, and the costs of transferring money for the purchased lots are borne by the buyer.

Auction «RusNumismat»

Also, auctions, and not only on the Internet, are held by LLC " Russian Numismatic House» (www.rusnumismat.ru) - not only coins, desktop medals and banknotes are put up for sale, but also awards, antiques and old and rare books.

More than 40 auctions have already been held, for participation in which you need to go through a free registration and pay a commission fee based on the results of the auction - it is 5-10 percent and is charged both from the buyer and from the seller.

Good old "Molotok" (now closed)

A popular trading platform that also exhibits collectibles (coins, medals, bonds) is molotok.ru.

This is one of the very first and largest online trading platforms, which began its activities back in 2000. However, despite the huge popularity, here the risk of running into a fake is higher than that of highly specialized sites.

Other auctions

In addition, it is worth mentioning that many large Internet resources for numismatists, in addition to those indicated, also have their own shops and coin auctions - these are Russian Coin, the newspaper Treasure Detector and Gold Miner, and others.

Among the “live” (outside the Internet) auctions from the house “Alexander”, the company “Coins and Medals”, the company “Gelos” can be noted - they are held both in Russia (the first two) and in Europe (“Gelos”).

The most famous in the USA are Dmitry Markov's auctions("Markov"), held annually in early January - it is here that the prices for Russian coins for the whole year are determined. By the way, they usually coincide with one of the main events in the world of numismatics - the International Numismatic Show, held in New York.

Today, unlike in the 80s or 90s of the last century, buying or selling a coin is not a problem. Abroad, almost every numismatic store has its own auction, and today Russian portals have picked up this trend, which indicates the active development of the coin business in the country. If you want to sell coins yourself, then watch the video tutorial on how to do it.

Bookmarked: 7

I regularly come across the question “Where can I sell coins?” and to paint again and again the possible options are too lazy. Therefore, it is logical to summarize this data in the form of a blog post and provide a link to it. So, let's consider a hypothetical situation - you found a bunch of coins and it is of no great interest to you, and therefore the task is to sell them for adequate money.

Stage 1 (initial assessment). First of all, you need to understand whether your coins are rare. This task in itself is not an easy one, because serious knowledge is required to properly evaluate coins, and if you are new to this business, get ready for difficulties. If we are talking about the coins of the USSR and the Bank of Russia, then the initial evaluation of the coins is carried out according to, which allow us to determine whether the coin is rare or not by face value and year of issue. However, the specifics of Soviet and Russian numismatics is the presence of rare coins even for simple years and denominations, which can cost more than even the most rare annual coins. But to identify them, special catalogs are required, in which the very differences are noted that allow us to consider the coin a different variety. In this note, I can recommend using . If, as happens in such situations, there is no desire to mess with catalogs and understand, then you can ask for help on one of the Internet forums, for example, here or here. It is there that there are many coin collectors by years and by variety. But do not expect that you will immediately lay out all the information for free. Often, when a rare coin is seen in a pile, experienced collectors try to get hold of it for cheap, so it is better to evaluate the coins in several places and provide large images of the coins so that everyone can see what is and how well it is. This will allow you to get the most accurate initial value of the coins. On some numismatic forums, it is possible to put up a lot with the wording "offer" and without the obligation to sell the lot. It also allows you to estimate the value of the coin.

Stage number 2 (drawing up the lot). When we have conducted a preliminary assessment, it remains to decide how to sell the coins - individually or in bulk. If the coins are really simple and not expensive, then there are two options - to sell in one lot, logically expecting less income with less labor, or to sell one coin at a time. In the case of rare and infrequent coins, I recommend selling them separately, because a composite lot will bring less income. And given that the amounts in this case are higher, then it is worth fighting for it.

Stage 3 (selection of a site for sale). Currently, there are a lot of places where coins are sold:

1. Notice boards type "From hand to hand" or "Avito". Not the best option, because. platforms do not have a narrow numismatic specialization and they are not popular with collectors.

2. Numismatic auctions Hammer type. Such auctions allow anyone who wants to, after registration, to put up a product for sale. Thus, the Molotok auction contains a very serious section dedicated to coins, where more than 100,000 coins are put up for sale at the same time. There will be plenty of people who want to buy coins. True, it is assumed that you will pay a commission to the auction if the goods are sold there (a little more than 3% of the value of the lot).

3. Forum auctions and exchanges. The vast majority of numismatic forums also contain a section (s) intended for the sale of collectibles. When choosing a forum for selling, you should carefully study the rules of the sales section, as well as user activity in the Exchange. If there are few lots on sale and the activity is hardly noticeable, then there is no point in placing lots there.

4. Sale "through a personal". If you put up an interesting coin on the forum, then do not doubt that you will be contacted through private messages by those interested in buying in the hope of snatching a coin cheaper than the market or close to it, but without open trading. Sometimes it is worth using this option, but for this you need to be sure that you understand the real price of the item being sold. Private bids are good for generating price understanding and can be used to determine the starting price for an auction.

5. Numismatic groups in social networks. In recent years, numismatic groups on social networks have been gaining popularity. In many of them, for a commission, you can put your coins up for sale. This sales option is suitable for ordinary coins, because. usually groups are represented mainly by novice collectors.

6. Weekly online auctions. In recent years, a lot of weekly online auctions have bred, which accept coins for a commission (from 10%) for putting up coins. Of the minuses - the commission, as well as the need to wait until the coins are sold and the buyer pays for them.

7. Large face-to-face auctions. There are several such numismatic auctions in our country. But in order to put coins there, it is necessary that they be rare and in demand. As in the case of online auctions, you will have to pay a commission. Given that the buyer also pays a commission, it turns out that the difference between the amount that the seller receives and the buyer pays can be 20-25%, which, you see, is not small. It is possible (if the coin is not mega rare) to sell the lot directly through forums where there is no commission for sold lots. However, for very expensive lots, this is an ideal result, because very rich people do not have time to sit on the forums waiting for rare coins, but they can get out several times a year to large auctions, or they can make orders to their trustees who will be present at the auction.

Coin collecting and numismatics are very similar concepts that have some differences. The second definition characterizes the science that studies the coinage of metallic money and the history of monetary circulation in various countries.
Collecting can be very different. This is a collection of coins, which is based on the selection of any signs that they possess. Samples that are made of unique materials, have exclusive technology, are dedicated to a memorable event or have significant historical value have long been valued.
The community of collectors is people united by common interests and lifestyle. The global network reduces distances. An online coin auction is a place where you can meet like-minded people, interesting, informative information and, of course, a large number of unique and high-quality items.
Auction.ru is an online auction of coins and other antiques, which is happy to welcome every visitor, regardless of the purpose of his visit. Auction.ru is an electronic auction platform that opens up wide opportunities for everyone who wants to learn something new, place their own samples or find missing copies.
The virtual numismatic coin auction works just like the real one. Everyone has the opportunity to place their own offer here or participate in other auctions.

It should be immediately recognized that even the rarest and most expensive coins of modern Russia in 2017 cannot compete with the numismatic rarities of the tsarist and even the Soviet era in terms of the maximum value of the lots. However, it is quite possible that you will end up with a coin whose price is thousands of times higher than its face value.

What types of coins of modern Russia can be put up for sale at a numismatics auction?

New coin of Russia 5 rubles, 2002. If there is no mint stamp on a copy of a coin, its value instantly reaches $50 and more.
Valuable coin of Russia 2 "Gagarin" rubles, 2001. Ordinary copies of the coin with the first astronaut are worth nothing, and without the mint mark - at least $ 60.
Valuable coin of Russia 5 rubles, 2003. The only feature of this coin is the negligible mintage, which determines its value - more than $100.
Coin 1 ruble of Russia, 1997. Here you have to take a magnifying glass. Highly valued (from $ 130) specimens are only varieties with a flat wide edging.
Coin 2 rubles (Russia), 2003. Another coin issued by the SPMD in a very small circulation. In good condition, it also breaks the $130 mark.
Coin 1 ruble (Russia), 2003. The situation is similar to the previous one, but here the price is even higher - from $170.
Coin of the Russian Empire 1 and 2 rubles, 2001. Officially, these coins were not issued into circulation, but a small amount of such rubles nevertheless fell into circulation. It is not known exactly how many pieces are on the market, but judging by the price (up to $ 2000), there are very few such rarities.
Coin 50 kopecks, 2001. If 1 and 2 rubles at least occasionally appear at the auction, then this artifact does exist in a kind of virtual reality. Although the price of this rare variety of a coin of modern Russia is quite specific - from $ 3,000.
Coin 5 rubles, 1999. This is the most expensive modern coin of Russia. At least it is officially recognized as existing. True, so far only 2 copies have been found. The cost of this rare coin of modern Russia is estimated at a minimum of $5,000.
Coin 5 kopecks, 1999. There have been legends about this coin of the new Russia for two years now. At the end of 2013, her photo appeared on one of the numismatic forums. The author claimed that he found a rarity by sorting through 9 kg of coins inherited from a close relative. He even put it up for auction with a price of about $25,000, but then withdrew the lot. It is said that some experts came to the owner's home and saw the coin with their own eyes. If so, then 1999 5 kopecks could potentially become the most expensive coin of modern Russia.

If you want to buy or sell one of the expensive coins of new Russia, online auctions of coins of modern Russia and numismatics, as well as catalogs will help you. The largest and most reliable of them is Volmar.

The answer lies in the very term "Auction" - this is the sale of goods through public auctions, in which the right to purchase the goods goes to the one who offers the highest price. This means that the seller will receive the maximum price for their product.

  • The maximum price, often exceeding the estimated, catalog value.
  • A large number of interested buyers bargaining among themselves for the right to own your product. The more interested persons, the higher your reward will be.
  • Confidence in the experts of the auction on the part of buyers increases the interest in your offer on the part of collectors. The auction values its reputation by protecting buyers and sellers from fraud that can occur with a direct sale. The auction acts as a guarantor.
  • The auction allows sellers to offer their goods directly to collectors, bypassing dealers.
  • Participants of "Auction Notebog" are collectors from all over Russia. An online auction allows you to present your product to the largest number of interested parties.
  • You have the opportunity to follow the auctions on-line.
  • The auction ensures complete anonymity of all participants.
