Raspberry Pi Backup

Now we have a minimally configured working system with a small set of programs. So that in case of any unforeseen circumstances we do not have to repeat all of the above, we will make a backup of our data.

  • Turn off the Raspberry Pi - in the console, type: sudo-halt
  • After turning off the Raspberry Pi, unplug it from the mains and remove the memory card
  • Insert flash card into computer card reader
  • Launch Win32DiskImager
  • Specify in the Image File field the path where our customized Raspbian image will be saved
  • Select the drive letter with your flash drive in the Device menu
  • Press the Read button and wait until the memory card image is created
  • Close Win32DiskImager
  • Properly disconnect your flash drive
  • Remove the memory card from the card reader

    Board version

    The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B is the direct successor to the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. The board is fully compatible with its predecessor but comes with better performance and new communication features:

    • 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz on a Broadcom BCM2837 single-chip chip;
    • built-in Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 4.1.

    In addition, the processor has an ARMv53 architecture, which means you can use your favorite operating system: Debian Wheezy, Ubuntu Mate, Fedora Remix, and even MS Windows 10 IoT.

    Technical details

    The Raspberry Pi 3 is equipped with a 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz per core as part of the Broadcom BCM2837 single-chip platform.

    This chip provides a performance boost of 50-60% compared to the Raspberry Pi 2 and an almost tenfold advantage over the first Raspberry Pi. Thanks to this, the computer opens up even more opportunities for the "Internet of things" and embedded projects.

    The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B has 1GB of RAM, but that memory is shared with the graphics subsystem.

    The VideoCore IV® dual-core graphics processor supports OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenVG, MPEG-2, VC-1 standards and is capable of encoding, decoding and outputting Full HD video (1080p, 60 FPS, H.264 High-Profile).

    Connecting peripherals

    To connect a monitor or TV, use the composite video output or HDMI connector. Resolution ranges from 640×350 (EGA) to 1920×1200 (WUXGA) for HDMI. Composite output works in PAL and NTSC formats.

    Speakers or headphones are connected via a standard 3.5 mm jack. Sound can also be transmitted via HDMI.

    The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B provides 4 USB ports connected by an internal hub. Among other things, you can connect a keyboard and mouse to them.

    To save CPU resources, the Raspberry Pi offers connections for standard modules through 15-pin slots:

    • CSI-2 - for connecting a camera via the MIPI interface;
    • DSI - for connecting a standard display.

    The following are available as low-level interfaces:

    • 40 general purpose I/O ports;
    • UART (Serial);
    • I²C/TWI;
    • SPI with selector between two devices;
    • power pins: 3.3 V, 5 V and ground.

    The following interfaces are available for communication on the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B:

    • Ethernet 10/100 Mbps with standard 8P8C (RJ45) output;
    • Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 4.1 provided by the Broadcom BCM43438 chip.

    Food

    The Raspberry Pi 3 is powered by a 5-volt adapter via the micro-USB connector or power pins. We recommend using a power supply with a current of at least 2 A in order to be able to connect more energy-intensive devices to USB ports.

    There is no hardware power switch on the board. To turn on the computer, just connect the power cable. To turn off, use the regular functions of the operating system.

    Instead of the hard drive traditional for conventional computers, the Raspberry Pi uses a microSD flash card. It must be pre-prepared - an operating system should be installed on it. Having several flash cards, you can alternately use them, having received several isolated images of computers.

    The Raspberry Pi Foundation has unveiled a new version of the Raspberry Pi mini computer without much hype, only announcing it on their blog. The popular gadget, like in the previous version, offers improved hardware, while the cost remains unchanged - only about 2,500 rubles ($35).

    The most significant upgrade in the Raspberry Pi 3 is the 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processor, clocked at 1.2GHz. According to the manufacturer of the computer, it should be 10 times faster than the chip installed in the first version of the Raspberry Pi, and on average 50-60% faster than the Raspberry Pi 2 processor.

    Our measurements confirmed the increase in performance (see graph below). In practice, the superiority of the new Pi 3 over its predecessors ranges from 2.5x (single-threaded applications) to 20x (video codecs). The powerful processor is complemented by gigabytes of RAM.

    Two other innovations will also delight potential buyers and those who like to design computer systems with their own hands. For the first time ever, Pi 3 has built-in support for 802.11n wireless networks and Bluetooth 4.1. In addition, the new version is compatible with the previous ones, since the new Broadcomm-SoC (BCM2837) is based on the same architecture as the processors of the predecessor models.


    Very economical PC

    Otherwise, little has changed: slots, a 5V Micro-USB power connector, and a 32-bit Raspian Linux OS. In the coming months, the Raspberry Pi Foundation will consider moving to 64-bit Linux.

    The increase in performance should slightly offset the increased power consumption of the mini PC: the Pi 3's power consumption under load is 0.3W higher than its predecessor. However, even with a measured value of 2.9W, the device is still extremely economical to use. To measure power consumption, we played a Full HD movie (1920x1080 pixels) using the OpenElec/Kodi media center during testing.

    In order to use the mini PC as a full-fledged computer, you need to install Raspbian Jessie - a full-featured system with a desktop interface. Alternatively, you can use the first versions of the Android OS available for download on the Internet, which can be installed on the Raspberry.

    If your Raspberry Pi 3 is going to be used in your living room, you should choose OpenElec. This is an OS based on the popular media center Kodi (formerly known as XBMC) with a gorgeous user interface, many great features and countless plugins that greatly expand the capabilities of the device.

    During testing, the OpenElec system worked without failures, there were no “braking” menus. Playing a movie with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels from a network resource also happened without problems: the movie starts up relatively quickly and plays without jerks and pauses for downloading. However, if your home network does not provide high speeds, it would be better to wait for the movie to preload.

    To work with the Raspberry Pi 3 mini computer, you will need an external Micro-USB power supply. We recommend using a model with at least 2A @ 5V. You will also need at least an 8GB microSD card on which to install the OS. If you plan to work with a large number of files, it is better to install 128 GB of memory right away. And for maximum speed, a card of at least class 10 is recommended.


    Windows 10: If you're more used to Microsoft's OS, you can install it on your Raspberry Pi 3 as well.

    Customized Windows 10

    To launch the Raspberry Pi 3, Microsoft is offering an update in the form of a customized version of Windows 10 for mini PCs: Windows 10 IoT Core Insider Preview. Windows 10 IoT Core was designed specifically for the Internet of Things (IoT) and small devices with or without a display. Microsoft explains the benefits: this version of the OS provides rich Windows functionality, automatic updates, powerful security features, and can be managed with common administrator tools.

    Raspberry Pi 3 is a significant step forward: now the computer performance is enough to assemble a compact, functional and powerful multimedia player. Thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi module and the specially designed OpenElec OS, the small “do-it-yourself computer” can become a powerful home entertainment machine.

    However, users who have a Raspberry Pi 2 at their disposal do not have to upgrade to the new model. Only those who have just turned their attention to this topic or have used the first generation Raspberry Pi so far, in any case, should take the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.
