The combination of roof and house colors

When building a roof, not only materials and technical details are important, but also the color of the future roof, because the appearance of the house should be harmonious, look aesthetically pleasing, and delight. It would seem that the choice of color is far from the main issue and there is no need to pay too much attention to it - you just take the color that you like and build the roof. But no. As practice has shown, it is worth thinking about the combination of colors of the house and the roof in advance.

Color compatibility for walls and roofs: 5 - match well, 4 - match well, 3 - don't match very well, 2 - don't match at all.

How to match the color?

Initially, what do you expect from the house as a whole? This is the first question to be answered before choosing a particular color. Do you want it to merge with the general landscape, as if dissolving in it, or, on the contrary, do you prefer your home to be bright, noticeable, and attract attention? The color should be chosen according to your answer. If you want the house to fit into the overall composition, a brown or green roof will suit you. More extravagant natures who are not afraid to experiment can safely choose bright saturated colors: red, purple, yellow.

For a house whose walls are covered with siding, you should focus on the color of the walls, and then select the tone of the roof for them.

It is worth paying attention to the color of the selected roof and its combination with the color of the facade. If the facade is made in warm colors, the roof cannot be made in cold colors; in this case, it is better to refuse all shades of blue. But with pale blue walls, this color will be combined very well, while a brown roof will seem out of place. The white facade is versatile, any roof color is suitable for it. Also universal colors include black and gray.

The most common color combinations for roofs and facades are as follows:

  1. Dark roof / light walls. This solution is traditional and the most widespread. It makes sense for conservative natures to choose it.
  2. Roof and walls of the same tone. With this combination, the facade and the roof form a single whole, they look harmonious, monolithic, but somewhat boring.
  3. Light roofs / dark walls. Not common, but it creates an interesting dissolving effect in the clouds. This option should be chosen by courageous individuals, innovators.

The combination of colors plays an important role, but even more important are the materials from which they are built.

Due to one or another of their properties, the choice of tone and shade of the roofing material is significantly limited. For example, you cannot find rich blue roofs made of natural tiles or roofs of copper and silver shades from roll materials. Because of this, you should prioritize what is more important for you: the color of the roof or the material - and choose based on one thing.

Roof color properties

Before you choose the color of your home's roofing, arm yourself with some knowledge of their properties. After all, it is very easy to choose the wrong option, not knowing that some colors are able to visually change the shape of houses, others - to narrow or expand them, others - to hide flaws, and the fourth - to lower or increase insolation. So what to expect from color?

Gutters can also be matched to the color of the roof or façade - red, green or brown. By the way, the latter are often also chosen for a brick facade or natural tiled roof.

The darker shades of rooftops attract light and heat up. Such roofs are more appropriate in the northern regions, but southerners prefer light roofs. Light colors also visually strengthen the building. The white facade is an architectural classic, but in combination with the same roof it can look faded.

Bright, saturated colors are more prone to fading. The lighter the color of the roof of the house, the less it is exposed to sunlight. However, yellow spots may appear on a white roof over time. In this regard, the most practical of all colors is gray, although it is the most nondescript. In addition, it should be borne in mind that you can choose a bright tone in the absence of a large number of small details and with simple forms of the house.

  1. If you have doubts about the combination of the tone of the roof and the facade of the house, choose shades made from the same color.
  2. You need to pay attention to the combination of shade with the architectural style of the houses. In a classic style, for example, it is not recommended to use bright colors.
  3. If you are not sure whether a certain color of the roof will suit your facade, entrust its choice to specialists.
  4. Pay attention to the environment, the appearance of neighboring houses, their façades and roofs. Even if you do not want to merge with them into a single compositional series, it will help you stand out beautifully from the general background.
  5. Take a closer look at the landscape around you. For houses located in the countryside near forests and mountains, the colors of the earth (brown, yellow, green) are suitable, and for houses built by water bodies, overlooking the seascape, all shades of water (blue, blue, turquoise) are suitable.
