Vityaz special forces officer group. Special forces of the armies of the world

The governments of many countries have long faced the threat of terrorism and have come to the conclusion that special power structures should be engaged in the fight against this global evil.

The political leadership of the Soviet Union began to consider countering terrorism as one of the most important state tasks in the late 70s of the last century. And one of the first domestic counter-terrorist units was the special-purpose training company of the Separate motorized rifle division of special purpose named after V.I. F. Dzerzhinsky, the decision on the formation of which was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs of the USSR on the eve of the XXII Olympic Games in Moscow. It was this unit that became the forerunner of the legendary Vityaz detachment and the ODON Special Forces Center, which was later created on its basis.

December 29, 1977 - the date of the beginning of the formation of the first special forces unit in the system of internal troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs. Its creation took place on the basis of the 9th company of the 3rd battalion of the 2nd regiment of OMSDON.

The corresponding order of the Minister of Internal Affairs stated: "The selection and recruitment of a special-purpose training company with officers, warrant officers, sergeants and conscripts should be made from among the disciplined, possessing the necessary physical, moral and psychological qualities of the internal troops."

The time for the creation of a unique unit was very limited, the deadlines were very tight. In January 1978, the URSN began to recruit officer personnel, the coordination of platoons, and the development of a training program. In parallel with this, the unit, staffed by the best soldiers of the 2nd regiment, began practical exercises and training.

Already in February, the special forces conducted the first demonstration lesson for the leadership of the troops, after which, for three months, intensive preparations for the demonstration performance were carried out in the training center of the unit. It was there that the first special forces soldiers had to take an exam before the Minister of Internal Affairs. By this time, the first 25 maroon berets were sewn for the company's servicemen by special order.

On June 1, 1978, after a successfully held demonstration lesson, the need for the existence of special forces in the Ministry of Internal Affairs was officially recognized. And serious purposeful work began! Its first months showed that for better training of conscripts, it is necessary to introduce regular positions of instructors in special training in the special forces. And they appeared in the states of the URSN in 1979.

In 1980, the first special forces unit of the internal troops opened an account for their military affairs. In June, the company carried out security tasks in the area of the Vnukovo airport, where the An-24 plane crashed. In July-August, she was on combat duty during the XXII Olympic Games, being in constant readiness at the first signal to act to protect public order and public safety at any of the Olympic facilities.
Since then, there have been dozens, hundreds of successful operations, many of which would be considered an honor to have elite anti-terror units from different countries of the world in their assets ...

Hot spot times

In October 1981, the personnel of the URSN OMSDON took part in a special operation to eliminate the riots in Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz). On December 18 of the same year, the "knights" together with group "A" of the KGB of the USSR freed hostages captured by criminals in a school in the city of Sarapul, Udmurt ASSR. In the fall of 1982, the special forces of the internal troops were involved in the elimination of the riots perpetrated by conscripts from the North Caucasus, en route by train through Moscow to Yaroslavl.

The first years of the existence of the special forces of the law enforcement forces and the first operations carried out by it showed the need to independently select and train recruits from among the conscripts. For these purposes, in July 1984, a training platoon was introduced into the URSN staff.

In November of the same year, the "knights" successfully completed a particularly important government assignment to provide assistance to employees of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office during the investigation of the so-called "Uzbek case". In July 1985, the company was on alert during the World Festival of Youth and Students, held in Moscow.

On September 21, 1986, the URSN OMSDON, together with group "A" of the KGB of the USSR, took part in a special operation to free an aircraft captured by terrorists at the airport of Ufa.

1988 became one of the most intense in the combat biography of the "knights". In February-March, they participated in suppressing mass riots, pogroms, robberies and atrocities against the local population in Sumgait of the Azerbaijan SSR, searched for weapons in places of their illegal storage, carried out seizure of stolen valuables from criminals, guarded especially important objects of the republican Ministry of Internal Affairs in places with complex operational environment. In July of the same year, they took part in a special operation to unblock the Zvartnots airport in Yerevan. In September, riots were liquidated in the Azerbaijani capital itself. In November-December, they were transferred to Armenia, where the special forces ensured the state of emergency.

This year is also significant in that it was in the eighty-eighth that Sergei Ivanovich Lysyuk, then head of the "knights", had the idea of holding an exam for the right to wear a maroon beret. Now it is difficult to imagine, but at first she did not find understanding among some representatives of the command of the troops, who believed that such a headdress should be worn by all special forces fighters without exception. Therefore, the first tests were carried out under the guise of complex and control and verification classes.

But time has taken its toll! The actions of the "krapoviks" in special operations, their moral and psychological hardening proved the importance of carrying out such tests, which became officially recognized in 1993: servicemen for the right to wear a maroon beret ”.

Taking into account the nature and content of the exam, its role in the training and education of the special forces, the ritual of presenting the maroon beret was developed, which became both a reward for courage, stamina, combat skill, and a sign of high professional qualifications and a symbol of valor and honor of the special forces of the internal troops.

And the combat biography of the detachment continued. In May 1989, commandos released hostages captured by criminals in the detention center in the city of Kizel and in the correctional labor colony in the village of Lesnoye. In June, they took part in an operation to suppress actions of nationalist terrorism, unprecedented in scale and cruelty, to liquidate riots, disarm extremists, escort refugee convoys in the Fergana region of the Uzbek SSR and in the elimination of riots in the Mangyshlak region of the Kazakh SSR. In July, a clash on interethnic grounds in the Abkhaz ASSR was prevented, and illegally stored weapons were confiscated from the population and militants. In November, together with law enforcement agencies, they took part in measures to restore public order in the Moldavian SSR.

The involvement of internal troops to participate in the resolution of interethnic conflicts necessitated an increase in the number, improvement of the structure and training of special-purpose units. In December 1989, a special-purpose training battalion was created on the basis of the URSN.

In 1990, the Transcaucasia became the main region where the "knights" were used. In January, they assisted border guards in guarding the state border in the Nakhichevan Autonomous Region of the Azerbaijan SSR, detained extremists from the Popular Front of Azerbaijan, and conducted several successful operations in Baku. In April, hailstorm guns were confiscated from Armenian militants and a special operation was carried out to free the hostages, eliminating the terrorist base near the city of Ijevan. In July, while patrolling the Armenian-Azerbaijani border by helicopter, a gang of more than 50 people was disarmed. This operation is still considered one of the most effective in the combat annals of the detachment ...

During an air patrol of a section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border near the village of Vagudi in the Sisian region of the Armenian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, the "knights" found a group of armed people who were near the destroyed sheath. They landed nearby with four helicopters and surrounded the structure. For the militants, the appearance of special forces was a complete surprise. But despite this, they quickly prepared for battle. And, bristling in all directions with the barrels of machine guns, they prepared to repel the attack.

Realizing that any military action would lead to bloodshed, the commanders of the special forces began negotiations with the leaders of the bandits. At first, they flatly refused to fold the trunks. Two hours passed in incredible tension, during which the special forces and the militants kept each other at gunpoint. "Knights" showed composure, withstood this psychological pressure. No one broke, did not break the iron rule: do not shoot without a command. As time went on, the extremists began to fizzle out. The menacing appearance of the fighters in maroon berets greatly diminished their warlike ardor. Finally, the field commander waved his hand resignedly: "Yours took ...". On that day, 7 mortars, a machine gun, 7 submachine guns, 5 carbines, 10 rifles, 4 homemade grenade launchers, 80 shells, 80 mines and a huge amount of cartridges were seized from the militants. The total weight of the trophies was more than one and a half tons.

If we talk about military operations, then it should be remembered that it was in August 1990 that the "knights", together with the soldiers of Group "A" of the KGB of the USSR, took part in a unique operation to free the hostages taken by armed criminals in the temporary detention center of the city of Sukhumi.

That year was marked by two more events. In the spring, for the first time in the internal troops, the battalion undertook an experiment to form a company staffed exclusively by contract servicemen. And in the fall, the first international contact of the special forces of the internal troops with their colleagues from abroad took place: in November, representatives of the "Vityaz" went on an internship to the special command "Cobra" of the federal gendarmerie of Austria.

Detachment to battle

The constant involvement of special forces in the execution of the most complex service and combat missions led to the next stage in the development of "Vityaz" - the creation of a separate military unit. And this happened in May 1991, when by order of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs on the basis of the special purpose training battalion of the 2nd regiment of the division. F. Dzerzhinsky, the 6th special-purpose detachment was formed. The young spetsnaz detachment continued the chronicle of glorious deeds.

In the spring of 1991, in the most difficult conditions of the highlands, his soldiers led a convoy with food through the blocked Roki pass, breaking through the economic blockade of the city of Tskhinval in the South Ossetian Autonomous Region, simultaneously disarming several formations of Georgian militants.
In June, the "knights", on the instructions of the command of the troops, checked the intelligence data on the preparation of extremists to carry out illegal actions in the Moldavian SSR. In November, they guarded the blocked building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in Grozny, suppressing all attempts by extremists to seize weapons and official documents. In December, they took part in ensuring law and order in Vladikavkaz, where the operational situation sharply deteriorated.

And the next year did not bring peace. In May 1992, the "knights" confiscated weapons from bandit formations in North Ossetia, in Vladikavkaz they detained and disarmed militants of Teziev's group, who were preparing a series of terrorist attacks. In July-October, they guarded the representations of the Supreme Soviet of Russia in the city of Nazran. In September, reconnaissance and search activities were carried out in Karachay-Cherkessia with the aim of detaining and disarming Chechen fighters who were trying to infiltrate Abkhazia. In October, riots were liquidated in the pre-trial detention center of the city of Nalchik, Kabardino-Balkaria, and especially dangerous criminals were detained in the city of Tyrnyauz. In November, extremist detachments were disarmed, preventing clashes between the opposing sides in the zone of the Ossetian-Ingush conflict.

In July 1993, a detachment, re-introduced into the zone of the Ossetian-Ingush conflict, in the area of the village of Ali-Yurt liquidated a bandit formation that terrorized local residents. And in the fall of the same year, when, against the backdrop of a political crisis in the country, riots broke out in the capital with the use of weapons, he defended the Ostankino television center.

In those days, extremists seized two armored personnel carriers and thirty vehicles of a division of internal troops that had arrived in the city to suppress the riots. Armed opposition units, inspired by these successes and their own impunity, moved to the television center. After a stormy rally, the demonstrators turned to action. The building of the hardware-studio complex was fired at from small arms, a shot from a hand grenade launcher was fired at it. The grenade flew to the second floor and exploded. A large splinter pierced the strap of Private Sitnikov's bulletproof vest. The comrades tried to take the wounded man out in the armored vehicle, but the snipers did not allow him to approach the equipment. Nikolai died in the arms of his colleagues. On October 7, 1993, a soldier of the Vityaz detachment, Private Nikolai Yuryevich Sitnikov, was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation ...

Since the fall of 1994, the entire history of "Vityaz" is a continuous series of special operations to suppress the activities of illegal armed groups in the North Caucasus region.

From September to mid-December, the detachment conducted reconnaissance and search activities on the Chechen-Dagestan border. And throughout the second half of December, he carried out special measures to free the servicemen of the operational regiment of the Volga District of Internal Troops captured in Khasavyurt on the first day of the introduction of federal troops into Chechnya.

In January 1995, "knights" flew in settlements along the railway line Mozdok-Chervlennaya-Grozny. In March, they took part in operations to free Argun and Gudermes from militants. In April, they clashed in a fierce battle with selected thugs near Bamut, where brothers from the Rosich detachment got into serious trouble on Lysaya Gora. Faced with large forces of militants, they were forced to fight surrounded. A few hours later, during which the "Rosichi" held a perimeter defense, the situation became critical: the detachment, literally bleeding, had already twelve "two hundred" and more than sixty wounded.

It was almost impossible to break through to the besieged: the area adjacent to the ill-fated height was completely bombarded by "spirits", the river was blocking the way. And yet the "knights", having received such a task, did it! Having broken through to the brothers, they immediately entered the fray. A little later, by some miracle, three detachment armored personnel carriers managed to slip through to the place of the clash. After that, it was decided to break out of the ring. "Rosichi" carried out from under the shelling their fallen and seriously wounded, "knights" covered them with dense fire. In that battle, deliberately taking a mortal risk in the name of saving their comrades, they actually demonstrated what the spetsnaz brotherhood means ...

At the end of May 1995, with the destruction of large detachments of militants who settled in the Nozhai-Yurt region of Chechnya, the Vityaz had to fight to take the well-fortified height 541.9 adapted for long-term defense. Already when advancing from the initial line, the special forces came under heavy fire from the militants and rolled back with losses. But, regrouping and replenishing ammunition, the next day they rushed forward again. They acted decisively and harmoniously. Those who were faithful to the commandment of spetsnaz: “We all leave or no one leaves”, were pulled out from under the fire and evacuated to the BMP of the wounded and the dead. Under the cover of armor, the bandits were driven out of their positions.

In January 1996, the "knights" took part in the storming of the village of Pervomayskoye, captured by Raduev's gang, which escaped from Kizlyar along with hostages after a terrorist act was committed in this Dagestan city.

The detachment moved to the southeastern outskirts of the village under the cover of helicopters. The starting position was taken along the irrigation ditch. The first fire contact occurred when the reconnaissance patrol of the "Knights" stumbled upon the forward guard of the Raduevites. Not expecting a meeting with such deeply wedged intelligence, the militants could not react in time and were destroyed in a short skirmish.

Having come to their senses and having occupied the positions left for the duration of the air raid, the Raduevites attempted to push back the commandos. But in vain - the detachment was firmly entrenched on the outskirts of the village. Then the reserves were pulled up, and the next day after the artillery preparation, the special forces went on an assault, discovering a gap in the enemy's defenses. The detachment managed to carry out deep raids into the village, freeing several hostages. At the same time, twelve fighters, including the deputy commander of the detachment, Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Kublin, were wounded. The "Knights", who had broken through into the depths of the settlement, were ready to stand on the conquered land to the last. But for tactical reasons, by order of the senior commander, they retreated to the outskirts of Pervomaisky. The scouts of the detachment were in the center of the village controlled by the militants, risking being hit by their aircraft. Their intelligence proved valuable to the leaders of the operation and contributed to the overall success.

For the special operation in Pervomaisky, the commander of the Vityaz detachment, Colonel Alexander Nikishin and his deputy for work with personnel, Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Kublin, were awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, many of the detachment's soldiers were awarded orders and medals.

In 1997-1998, the detachment carried out combat missions in the regions bordering with Chechnya. At the same time, at the point of permanent deployment, there was intense work to improve the educational process, taking into account the experience gained during the performance of combat missions during the first Chechen campaign: everyone was sure that it would still come in handy ...

Since June 2000, the "knights" are again in the North Caucasus. And again one special operation follows another.

On March 28, 2002, the detachment, which was on a regular military mission, was tasked with checking operational information about the location of a large cache. A few minutes to collect - and the column of armored personnel carriers is already flying towards Argun. The indicated area was found quickly, cordoned off and reconnoitred. The building of the abandoned school, which was to be inspected, stood on a large vacant lot. Several houses were located almost right next to it, where it was possible to equip a sufficient number of firing points from which everything around could be shot through.

The upper floors were cleaned out quickly, leaving the basement. Several assault groups entered it from different directions. The one that included Sergeant Sergei Burnaev, in the very first room she found an artillery shell - a blank for installing a land mine. The next few rooms were empty. For further advancement, the commandos had to climb over an opening slightly larger than a window. It was not easy for tough guys in body armor with weapons and ammunition to do this. Sergei, as one of the most experienced in the group, was the first to climb through the window and began to cover the movement of the others.
Suddenly, from the darkness at close range, several machine-gun fires were heard: the militants were beating from the embrasure in the wall. Sergeant Burnaev was the closest to the militants. The "spirits" cut him off with fire, preventing the others from helping Sergei. At this time, the head of the group decided to withdraw: the ammunition was running out, it was necessary to pull out the wounded. They also gave a command to Burnaev. They would have covered him, but Sergei showed with signs that he would stay and cover the rest himself. Perhaps he saw something that the others did not see ...

The last of the departing fighters, who ran to the door broken down by the armored vehicle, froze for a second: an explosion was heard in the depths of the basement. One of the militants threw a grenade after the "knights" who were carrying out their wounded brothers. In the cramped dungeon, the death of most of the group was inevitable. But Sergei did not allow this: he rushed to the grenade and covered it with his body ... On November 16, 2002, Sergeant Burnaev was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia.
On October 23-26 of the same year, the "knights" together with the employees of the Special Forces Center of the FSB of Russia freed hostages taken by terrorists in Moscow during the performance of the musical "Nord-Ost". And in January 2003, they again flew to Chechnya, where, together with law enforcement officers, they carried out special operations to destroy illegal mini-oil refineries, helped police officers to check the passport regime, looking for legalized militants, and ensured the safety of local authorities.

On February 4, 2003, the "knights" urgently left for Argun to check operational information of exceptional importance. Arriving at the scene, the group, led by Senior Lieutenant Ivan Shelokhvostov, immediately launched an assault on the private household where the militants were hiding. They met the commandos with heavy fire from machine guns. The officer, having destroyed two bandits, was wounded and ordered his subordinates to withdraw. He himself remained inside the building to cover the retreat of his soldiers and the evacuation of other wounded. From the explosion of a grenade in the house, household gas ignited, a fire broke out. Then there was a powerful explosion, the ceiling and roof slabs collapsed, burying the courageous officer under them. In that battle, the "knights" managed to destroy, among other militants, a high-ranking field commander Chantaev ... Senior Lieutenant Ivan Shelokhvostov, thanks to whose courage and self-sacrifice the combat mission was completed, was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia ...

In October-November 2006, the detachment's consolidated group, in addition to the military operations in the North Caucasus, successfully completed a particularly important task of the Government of the Russian Federation to provide assistance and ensure the safety of employees of the General Prosecutor's Office investigating economic crimes in Vladivostok.

In the summer of 2007, the "knights" took part in a special comprehensive preventive operation to suppress the activities of the underground gangs in Dagestan, having chalked up many victories - the destruction of militant bases and camps for the training of suicide bombers, the seizure of weapons and ammunition.
On August 2, a group led by Captain Dmitry Serkov was in an ambush on one of the likely routes of the bandits' movement. Special forces sappers moved forward to set up a minefield, and at that moment militants appeared. Immediately assessing the situation, Dmitry decided to start a battle in order to ensure a safe withdrawal for his subordinates. During the shootout, he was wounded in the arm. Simultaneously with the commander, the group's signalman was seriously wounded. Taking out from under the fire a bleeding comrade, the captain received a second bullet wound, this time in the leg.

Seeing that the commandos were deprived of the ability to move, the militants tried to get close to them. Having let them as close as possible, the officer, overcoming the pain, destroyed two more with machine gun fire and grenades, continuing to fire with the others. The Knights were already rushing to help. But at that moment, Captain Serkov received a third wound, which turned out to be fatal.

In the course of further clashes, the gang was completely eliminated. Among the killed bandits were two field commanders who had been on the federal wanted list for a long time ... For courage and courage shown in the performance of military duty, Captain Dmitry Serkov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia.

Center of Glorious Deeds

In September 2008, a Special Purpose Center was formed on the basis of the Vityaz detachment. Since then, its servicemen have practically constantly taken part in the disarmament and liquidation of illegal armed formations, organized criminal groups, and the confiscation of illegally stored weapons from the population; in the suppression of acts of terrorism, in ensuring the safety of officials and individual citizens of the Russian Federation on the territory of the North Caucasus region. In the course of their combat missions, the Center fighters destroyed 78 and captured 12 militants. In battles with the bandits, four commandos fell - Senior Lieutenant Dmitry Kozlov, Sergeant Yevgeny Radunsky, Corporal Vadim Stepanov and Sergeant Alexei Sitnikov, who was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia. More than 100 soldiers and officers of the Central Service Center were awarded state awards.

The Center has created and has already passed the process of formation of highly specialized units, which have not yet been part of the special forces of the law enforcement forces. This is a group of divers who have experience in performing combat missions on Lake Baikal, in the Japanese and Caspian Seas, and in the reservoirs of the Moscow Region. These are groups of glider and hang-glider pilots, an electronic reconnaissance unit and some others.

In recent years, CSN fighters have been actively mastering the science of mountaineering and parachute jumping: 2 instructors and 40 excellent parachute trainers have been trained here, 58 special forces have fulfilled the "Alpinist of Russia" standard. The team of the Center became the winner of the Russian ski mountaineering championship in 2010 and 2011, and in 2012 it became the best in the country in this sport. This year, the CSN fighters as part of the Russian national team took part in the international mountaineering competition "Glacier Patrol" in the Swiss Alps and won prizes.

The test must be performed in the specified sequence in the shortest possible time.

Exercise number 1

A partner is needed to complete the exercise. The partner puts his feet shoulder-width apart, tilts the body parallel to the ground (floor). The subject makes a vault over a partner, crawls between the partner's legs and again makes a vault. Repeat the exercise 7 times (i.e. seven vaults and seven climbs).

The tested person is active - 20 points
Tested in battle 1 x 2 takes initiative - 50 points

During testing, athletes with sports categories in boxing, karate and hand-to-hand fighting are tested separately from the rest.

According to the proposed table, it is necessary to determine the total number of points by adding.

The lower limit is 295 points. It is not advisable to take a candidate with a lower number of points for service in special forces. Testing is carried out on the same day, the sequence of tests must correspond to their numbering. The time between each test should not exceed 10 minutes, while the ability of a person to endure various loads in a limited time is assessed.

From the first days of the Chechen war, the "knights" took part in battles with bandits, liberated Argun, Gudermes, Bamut, Novogroznensky, Pervomayskoye, distinguished themselves in the capture of height 541.9 in the Nozhai-Yurt district.
In 1999, on the basis of the detachment and the 1st Red Banner Regiment of ODON, the 1st Red Banner Special Purpose Regiment "Vityaz" was formed. However, three years later, in the interests of more efficient performance of tasks, he was again reorganized into a detachment. On December 29, 1977, a special training company (URSN) was formed on the basis of the motorized rifle regiment of the Separate Special Purpose Motorized Rifle Division (OMSDON) named after Dzerzhinsky.

The servicemen in this unit were selected from among the best athletes in the division on a voluntary basis. The candidates had to have excellent physical fitness and psychological stability. In 1989, a battalion was created on the basis of the company, which in 1991 became the Vityaz special-purpose detachment.

The detachment was originally created as an anti-terrorist unit. "Vityaz" regularly conducts operations to combat terrorism, patrols in Chechnya and on the border of the Caucasus. In addition, the soldiers are trained to prevent riots in prisons. More than 70 soldiers of the detachment were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation for courage and heroism.

History

In the 70s, in connection with the increased incidence of terrorism in European countries, it became necessary to have military units designed to carry out particularly important tasks in the fight against terror. In the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs, it was decided to create a special unit of constant combat readiness as part of the operational division of the internal troops, whose servicemen would have special training to counter terror and other illegal actions.

At the beginning of 1978, work began on the formation and training of a special-purpose training company (URSN). The recruitment of conscripts for this unit was carried out from among the best ODON athletes on an exclusively voluntary basis.

The first operation entrusted to the company was to provide security for the Olympic Games in Moscow.

In 1991, the Vityaz special-purpose unit was created. During the formation, the experience gained in the URSN and similar divisions of Russia was used.

The idea to take an exam for the right to wear a crane beret was also born at Vityaz. The first commander of the detachment, Sergei Ivanovich Lysyuk, together with other officers, developed the criteria for passing exams in special, physical and tactical training, which are still being carried out in all special forces units of the internal troops.

Two days of pitch hell: several hostages who miraculously managed to escape, negotiators incapable of negotiations, hysteria and fainting, hostages shot dead. Then there was an assault in the early morning of October 26, piped gas, 130 dead - mainly due to unqualified medical assistance. Or simply - because of not provided assistance.

On the night of October 25-26, a decision was made to storm. It is known that the operational headquarters included the deputy head of the FSB, General Viktor Pronichev, and the head of the presidential administration of the Russian Federation, Alexander Voloshin. From the operational headquarters, a command was sent to storm the units of the Central Security Service of the FSB, which were commanded by another deputy head of the FSB, General Alexander Tikhonov.

The force operation began with the supply of gas through the ventilation system. The exact time when the gas began to flow into the hall with the hostages is still unknown. The formula of the gas itself is still classified. It is known that the composition of the gas included heavy opiates based on fentanyl (used in medicine for anesthesia). It is also known that this substance is fatal with rapid and under-dosed use and is especially dangerous when exposed to people in a sitting position.

The exact time of the start of the military operation to destroy the terrorists is unknown. Some of the employees of the Central Security Service of the FSB entered the hall through a gay club that functioned on the territory of the theater center. Video cameras recorded only the appearance of special forces in the foyer of the theater center at 6.22 am. It is known that during the assault the commandos were also poisoned, but none of them died under the influence of the gas.

It is also known that the terrorists recorded the flow of gas for at least twenty minutes, identified it as an assault attempt, but the explosive devices and suicide bombers' belts were not detonated, and there was no attempt at mass execution of the hostages. The hostages saw that some of the terrorists (shahids) fainted from the gas.

As a result of the special operation, all terrorists, even those who were unconscious, were shot (including control shots to the head).

The operational headquarters has thought out a special operation to destroy the terrorists to the smallest detail. The operational headquarters had no plan to rescue the hostages. 129 people died.

commandos rescue hostages

The authorities called the storming of the Theater Center on Dubrovka “a brilliant special operation”. The investigation in the Nord-Ost criminal case established that the death of the hostages occurred as a result of a confluence of many factors, primarily from severe chronic diseases of the hostages themselves, aggravated by dehydration, lack of food and stress. The rescue operation was recognized as effective, despite the fact that the case file recorded the failure to provide any medical assistance to 73 of the 129 killed hostages.
